How do you guys rate Google Chrome vs Firefox?
To be honest Pharvey, I stay clear of Google Chrome (because I don't trust them). For me, if not Firefox then have a look at Opera, I like it and it's lightning fast.

Cheers SF :thumb: - downloaded Opera to give it a go for a few days. Absolutely spot on! Whilst I like and have been using Firefox for quite some time, Opera is undoubtedly my browser of choice at the moment. Hopefully I'm not going to run into any issues....

I don't know what these opera, firefox, chrome etc browsers do exactly, so have just played safe and stuck with IE8/Google, but I have been tempted to get the chrome one recently as this new Acer laptop is black with brushed aluminium.

But apart from aesthetic compatability, what basically would I be missing out on function/performance wise, by staying with a IE/Google set-up, which I'm assuming is old hat these days?? Win7 64-bit if relevant.

Cheers,
SJ

SJ,

For me, quite simply a) ease of use - all similar, but I prefer the Opera layout etc. b) speed - from current experience, 1. Opera 2. Firefox 3. IE c) Customisability (is that a word?) - not so experienced with Opera at the moment, but both Opera and Firefox are head and shoulders above IE IMHO. Customise your browser to suit your requirements easily and effectively.

With Opera, you can also download Opera mobile and link/synchronise the 2 - don't know whether this is possible with IE?

I'm sure other more experienced users will pull me up on quite a few things, but that's my 2 pennies worth!!

I use Opera as my standard browser, like it, especially the layout and the speed dial start up etc.

To be honest though I think it's good, if you can/want to spare the space they take up, to have a couple of browsers on the computer so you can have a choice.

I have IE8, Opera and Firefox on.

Reason is, some of them still have the odd glitch/bug etc but are obviously being addressed in updates.

For example, the new versions of Firefox are getting a bit wonky with Windows XP unless the XP version is the 2009 or 2010 Java script etc updated ones, but Opera doesn't seem to mind at all.

IE9 only works with Windows 7 and it won't be long before IE8 becomes completely outdated and just cannon fodder for nasties, just a default browser really IMO.

However, I tried to print off my UK bank statement from the Internet banking site the other day with Opera and a Cannon printer and it just froze saying it (Opera) was having 'Spooling' problems and wasn't responding, not possible. Then tried to print it off with IE8 and it just went through with no dramas. :?

But Pharvey, I too much prefer Opera to any of the others and is widely regarded as being the fastest for any mobile platforms too. Don't think you'll have any issues with it though, been using it for almost a year and no dramas.

Have used Firefox since it came out. Daily dealings with computer security, viruses and malware on other peoples machines has taught me not to go near any version of IE on my own!

:offtopic:

Maybe this lot needs to go into a new browser thread or this one as this thread is for general computer problems.

And for a no frills, speedy little browser try Google Chrome. Sorry if it's been mentioned before and I missed the post.

And then I scrolled up to see the post about Chrome. Ooops. I personally use Chrome and it's very fast. Mainly because I don't have 47billion add-ons that cause a laggy browser (I only have 2). Chrome's great for translating whole pages without any copy and pasting. The Google app just doesn't work as well with other browsers. I would definitely give IE a wide birth and only use it (if you really have to) as a backup browser. I've never used Opera on my computers but I use the mini browser for my phone and it's ace! Firefox used to be my default choice but I find it takes too long to load and I put that down to my bookmarks so I stopped using it.

HH Citywide again

I run W7 and Firefox on my laptop

My connection is either HH Citywide or my Nokia mobile (as a modem)

For the last few days my view of BBC sport (bookmark)has been up to date when using the Nokia but 2 days out of date using HH CW

Cleared my cache, rebooted, ran avast and malwarebytes

Same result

Anybody else getting the same problems?
