Similar incident happened to me last year. I was taking my young friend back to town from Khao Takiab around 1 a.m. As we approached the flyover where you have to turn left, two bikes with passengers started to follow us. One of the passengers had a stick he could have put into the wheels. My friend...

On my last visit home to Texas, the woman I had married when she was 22, from a very high class suburb, was singing in a gay country bar in Houston. Her second/third husband is about twenty years younger, and my Thai boyfriend is 25 years younger than I am. When I had my cable TV installed in Housto...

My father in law smoked cigars, and always had a nasty old spittoon next to his favorite chair. One day the baby tried to drink out of it!!

All around the world, there are billions of people who never travel more than a few hundred miles from their home. However, except for a trip to Egypt as an infant, that applies to Jesus, who changed the world. My grandfather was from an old New Jersey family, but his company moved him to San Franci...

...The only thing I never ever will understand, why Farangs are sooooooooo eager to buy land & houses in a country which seems to be uninterested in selling anything under acceptable and legal conditions? Is it the exchange-rate, the hope to be one time in life owner of a cheap house in a tropi...

I'm trying not to be overly defensive or provocative here. The reason that we even mention things like, "I didn't vote for Bush" or "I'm sorry about what my country did in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Guantanamo, Iraq, or..." is that many of us never approved those things that were d...

Yes, olmate, a motorcycle is far thriftier on fuel. My CBR150R gets 70 miles per gallon, 30 km/liter, so it costs one baht per liter. Surely the smaller bikes would get 35km/liter if they didn't have four Thais on board. But it's nearly impossible to get somebody who grew up on V-8 cars in North Ame...

Same-same for me, coming from Shanghai on the 24th of April. I walked to the arrivals queue outside, the lady insisted that I'd pay 2,200 baht, and I did. Higher fuel prices, maybe. Sometimes they'll bargain by 200 baht, so I said "He pays tolls and that includes airport fee, yes?" Yes.

There happen to be five of us Americans, here in this moobahn, but I'm sure that's an over-concentration. None of the winter snowbirds are from the USA, but two couples are Canadian (Vancouver islands), so the flight once a year is not like mine used to be from Houston. I don't get out enough, but w...

About 28 baht per liter for 91 octane, nearly 30 baht for 95 octane. Diesel is only a bit cheaper than 91 octane. Of course, the prices fluctuate, mostly upward, recently.

Further example: after less than a year of living at Khao Takiab, my partner and I decided to look elsewhere for two rooms with great security, at the beach. He's Thai, and he found that most of the thousands of condo units are owned and not rented out yearround. We went to the recommended CondoChai...

Okay, a Hua Hin dog story, here goes. Last December, I was walking the beach at low tide, north from Khao Takiab. Just walking near the water's edge, not bothering anybody, no weapon on me. Out of some palatial residence with open gate comes this adult boxer dog with a muzzle, who rushes out like a ...

Okay, now it's been another 45 days, and how do you like the Mall, now that 99 clothing stores have opened up, along with Sizzler, a sit-down S&P, the bowling alley, 49 mobile shops, and Lord only knows how many more? My latest thought is, "Where do all the locals get enough money to shop, ...

Not sure if I stayed in Cha Am that one night, or not. All we ajarns (39 Thais, an Englishman, and an American) rode down from the North and stopped at every wat and outlet mall along the way, after being originally promised we'd spend a whole day at the beach. Well, we got to Cha Am, supposedly, ar...
