Hello from grey miserable UK

Post by Fenchurch »

With any luck I'll be coming out to stay in HH soon. I just wanted to say thanks to you all for answering newbies' questions on this forum -- it's been very helpful for me to read through your answers to other people's questions.

As far as I understand it:

Visa:
I can get a 60 Tourist Visa in the UK, which can be extended for 30 days for 1900 Baht.
If I manage to get a double entry visa in the UK, I might be able to leave Thailand at one of the borders and return on the same visa, and perhaps stay for as long as 6 months?

Accomodation:
Renting a place for 10-15k Baht a month shouldn't be too difficult?

Hua Hin:
A nice relaxing place, without all the madness of Pattaya?

Is that about right?

Welcome to HHAD. Good to see you posting. I'll leave the visas to Lomu or one of the others, but on the other 2 questions, yes, you're about right.

The accommodation question would probably mean a little townhouse somewhere, rather than a condo with swimming pool, but it's a reasonable price to expect to pay in rent.

You're quite right about the Tourist Visa. With the double entry, you will have to exit Thailand after 90 days (with the 30 day extension to the first part) and you'll receive another 60 days on reentry that can be extended by 30. A "border run" is easily done at Ranong and over to Burma. It'll take you a full day on busses and boats, but is an experience and you can split the journey up with a night or so in other places en route if you want. You'll find out how to do it when you're here just by asking around.
If you want to stay longer than 6 months, I'd go for a multiple-entry Non Immigrant Visa. This is valid for 12 months and you get stamped in for 90 days each time you enter Thailand. The number of times you can enter is limitless as long as the visa is still valid. If you exit a couple of days before the visa expires, you get a "bonus" 90 days, thus making the visa work for almost 15 months. In this last instance, it dosn't matter that the visa itself has expired during the final 90 day stay. It's the entry stamp that matters.
I'd also apply for either the TV or Non Imm O through the Thai consulate in Hull, assuming you're a Brit. They're very helpful, turnaround time is quick and applications can be made by post (you have to appear in person at The Embassy in London and you won't get a multi Non O visa from them, given your circumstances).
If you go for the multi entry non O from Hull, the purpose of visit is "visiting family and friends". Give them a call first and check if it's OK to do this to see your "girlfriend" (assuming you're male). If that's still OK, you're home free. See the link below. It's very informative:

You can even print the application form off their site.

Welcome to HHAD Fenchurch, a lot of the answers and a good general guide to living in Hua Hin can be found on the original expat website:

Great Advice

Post by Fenchurch »

Cheers for all the replies. I didn't think I would be eligible for the multiple-entry Non Immigrant Visa, but I hadn't considered the "visiting family and friends" option. Thanks for the tip. Yep, I'm a British guy. I don't have a Thai girlfriend to visit, but I'm sure there are ways around that. I will look into it.

Finding this forum was the result of a long search. I've been trying to decide where in the world to settle down for a while. I'm a novelist, so I can work from anywhere. (I did toy with the idea of trying for a non-imm visa by claiming I was researching a book set in Thailand, but I couldn't find that category on the visa form).

I like Thailand a lot, and I've travelled all over the country in the past. But I didn't know much about HH until I found this forum. From what I've read, it sounds like the ideal place. Relaxing, not too hectic. I enjoy socialising, but I'm not into go go bars or thumping dance music.

Hopefully I'll bump into some of you this summer. Even the rainy season in Thailand beats the UK hands down. The cost of everything in Britain is through the roof now. Have you seen the new 2012 Olympic Games logo?

(I would supply a URL, but I don't think I'm permitted to yet.)

Those five splodges cost £400,000, which pretty much sums up things here in the UK.

Welcome to this Forum my man!!!

I don't kbow bothing about the Visa Issue I'm sure Mr. Lomu had allready helped you out with that one.

On the Accomodation front I can say yeah there are many places which is within your price range.

On Hua Hin
Well I've spent 4 awesome University years @ one of the International Universities in Hua Hin during that Time I learned to apreciate Hua Hin and it's laid back much slower pace lifestyle than Bangkok or Pattaya. It my kind of Chill Out town.

Good to hear creative people are moving to Hua Hin. And congratulations on making this your career! I'm an artist, musician, at heart, but worked in computing. Now retired. I'm hoping that Hua Hin welcomes creative people?

And yes, so much is wrong with the UK now. That is why so many of us are seeking a place in the sun...

I'm a writer too

Post by lambella »

Hi!
I live in Hua Hin, near Khao Ka Lok, and I am a writer too hoping my scheme to run writing courses will take off.
Are you planning to write about Thailand? Fiction or not?
I'm on my third book which is about Thailand all from a female pov, and farang female. Now that's rare!
Good luck.
It's a beautiful place.

fenchurch, hope it all works out well for you.
i'm in a similar situation, though not a writer!. i have become totally disillusioned with life in the uk too & the general grievances i have would be far to many to list. europe isnt much of a better option.
i have no doubt you will enjoy hua hin, it is a great place & one i will be spending a lot of time in over the coming years.
one poster (cant remember who?) once described it as a place that has a little bit of everything. they were spot on with that description.
as for that logo ! i agree, what a waste of money!
good luck
