about this news from bangkok post
Prachuap Khiri Khan _ The government has been urged to hold a public hearing on proposals to create Thailand's 77th province. The idea has drawn a mixed reaction from politicians and businessmen in the two upper southern provinces from which the new province would be carved.
The 77th province, if established, would comprise Cha-am district in Phetchaburi and the districts of Hua Hin and Pran Buri along with Sam Roi Yot sub-district in Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Siriphan Kamolpramote, mayor of Hua Hin municipality, backed the proposal, saying it would help boost management capacity, particularly in terms of local budgeting and development.
However, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi provinces would both be affected as the areas designated for the proposed new province covered their business areas, he said.
Mr Siriphan called on the government to conduct a public hearing on the proposal.
Although he supported it, he was worried about the possible impact on Hua Hin. The name of Hua Hin may not exist if the new province was named Klai Kangwol. Hua Hin may instead be called Klai Kangwol district, he said.
On Tuesday, the cabinet approved a feasibility study into carving the 77th province out of parts of the two provinces. The creation of the new province, yet to be named, would celebrate His Majesty the King's 80th birthday next year.
Pairoj Makmoo, chairman of the Hua Hin-Cha-am Tourism Business Association, said he agreed with the idea as the proposed new province would shorten the travel time for people going to the offices of provincial authorities.
Currently, some people wanting to contact authorities have to travel over 100km to reach the Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial hall.
Expressing a similar view, Nukul Pornsomboonsiri, mayor of Cha-am municipality, said he supported the creation of the new province.
As prime business areas would be included in the new province, a public hearing should be conducted, he said.
Suebyos Baiyaem, vice-president of the Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial administration organisation, questioned the government's move to put high-potential business areas in the proposed new province.
Peerapol Prachuapmoh, former Mahachon party candidate in Prachuap Khiri Khan's constituency 1, believed the government was seeking political gain from the proposal.
His view was echoed by Chalermchai Sri-on, a Democrat party executive, who said the proposal was politically motivated.
But Peera Sukijpaneenit, former Thai Rak Thai MP for Prachuap Khiri Khan, defended the proposal, saying it would benefit local residents as they would save on travelling costs and time when contacting authorities.
Niphon Suwannawa, adviser to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Chamber of Commerce, saw the creation of the new province as unnecessary as it would be populated by only 290,000 people.
The government should find other ways to seriously promote tourism in the two southern provinces instead of creating a new province, he said
