Post by PeteC »

It's been 20 years but to me seems like yesterday. A small grim reminder of the event.

Post by PeteC »

Khaosod English

Three major Thai provinces - Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi - which were hit by the devastating tsunami 20 years ago, will hold memorial events in their respective provinces on December 26, 2024.

In Phuket, Mai Khao Subdistrict Administrative Organization in Thalang District will organize an event at Mai Khao Cemetery. There will be religious ceremonies from three religions - Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity - to dedicate merit to those who died and went missing. The event will include a reading of the Prime Minister's message for National Accident Prevention Day and will display national flags of 45 countries that lost citizens in the tsunami disaster.

In Phang Nga province, events will be held at 5 locations in Bang Muang Subdistrict, Takua Pa District:
At the Bureaj Phadungkit Patrol Boat (Tor 813)
At Nam Khem Village Tsunami Memorial
At Nam Khem Tsunami Museum
At Khao Lak Marriott Beach Resort & Spa
At the Tsunami Victims Cemetery in Bang Maruan Village

In Krabi province, the event will be held at Ton Sai Bay, Moo 7, Phi Phi Island, Ao Nang Subdistrict, Muang District. Activities will include laying wreaths at the underwater tsunami memorial located about 1 kilometer offshore from Ton Sai Bay, Phi Phi Island.

There will also be an educational exhibition for National Accident Prevention Day, providing information about natural disasters and preparation for potential future incidents.

Twenty years on: 'My boat was metres from the shore when the tsunami hit'

Boxing Day, 2004.

When the earthquake struck at 06:30 (01:00 GMT), I was on a ferry, headed towards Havelock – an island in the Indian archipelago of Andaman and Nicobar.

Known for its silver sand and clear blue waters, the Radhanagar beach there had recently been crowned "Asia's Best Beach" by Time magazine..............
