A hidden gem in the North

In the northern town of Nan, the rainy season provides vacationers a chance to experience a slower pace of life amidst picturesque mountainous landscapes. Boundless stretches of rice fields sprout and become verdant as gentle winds chase away the heat.......

Re: Spotlight on Nan
I haven't read the whole article yet, but I think nothing in there that Nan was the Thai communist stronghold from 1965 to 1983. There are tours now to the key locations, and some buildings and camps still exist for tourism purposes. Google it if further interest.

Nan is a province I have never visited but would very much love to go. It looks very beautiful. Maybe one day.

Ex-banker sounds the alarm on Nan
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... arm-on-nan
The northern province of Nan is home to one of the country's key watershed forests, the source of several major waterways, including the Chao Phraya River. This forest area was declared a first-grade national forest in the 1960s.
However, over the past 50 years, about 28% of this vital has been lost to agricultural activities.
Banthoon Lamsam, a prominent resident of Nan, referred to this as an "intractable malady", stating that the province's forests and local communities are in urgent need of assistance.
Mr Banthoon, Chairman Emeritus of Kasikorn Bank, highlighted this issue during a keynote speech at a charity gala "Together for Nan and Beyond", organised by the Harvard Business School Association of Thailand, Yale Club, and Christie's Auction House on Thursday............

Re: Spotlight on Nan
Almost a year now for the below article, and it is the last detailed and well written in-country spotlight article the Bangkok Post has published. I look for new articles to post daily. They think no one is interested I guess in Thailand local travel. Very sad and shortsighted.

^ If and as a "Gem", I hope it stays so - the Hi-So Thais will never go there and other "Me-Tourists" will also stay away.
I'd love to get to places like this as would the LHG, but in all honesty it's not somewhere I would not stay more than a couple of days - the LHG maybe different, but a lack of Mobile/Internet/Coffee (Toilet for me!!) will tell
In all seriousness, comparing North vs South during April/May (***** Hot) and August/September (***** Wet)..... Where to go for a visit?

Re: Spotlight on Nan
PH could you explain about the lack of Internet? As far as I can see Nan hotels have wifi (even the homestay "Baan Mai Muang Nan", some even boast high-speed! And no squat toilets I'm sure.pharvey wrote: ↑Thu Jun 19, 2025 9:38 pm ^ If and as a "Gem", I hope it stays so - the Hi-So Thais will never go there and other "Me-Tourists" will also stay away.

Are you talking about visiting one location in particular? I like the idea of a visit to Nan.
Re: Spotlight on Nan
Spent some time in Nan in January 2024, which is a great time to be up there due to the cooler climes (if you can tolerate the air pollution). There is plenty of internet, coffee and toilets!
Yes, the hi-sos and tourists go there, so I wouldn't call it "undiscovered", it (the town) was the most touristy place we saw on our month-long camping trip in the north.

Sadly, no one seems to be interested in anything Thailand-related anymore... now where can I get a good fryup?

Re: Spotlight on Nan
I visited Nan and enjoyed it. The Riverside art gallery is very large and would grace any major city. The surrounding areas are great to explore on car or motorbike. Long, winding and steep. There is an excellent Homestay just outside Nan but i cant remember the name unfortunately.
I did a tour of Pai, Chang Rai, Nan and Vientiane. A fine change from Buriram/HuaHin.
