A Crazy Traffic Weekend

Post by Big Boy »

Apart from key events such as His Majesty's birthday celebrations, I think this weekend has been the worst I've known local traffic. I've been reading reports on Facebook all weekend, and parking at attractions in places such as Santorini has been completely full.

I personally found myself parked on top of the Market Village car park for 40 minutes with some ignoramus deciding he was going to stop every other car while he was waiting for a parking space. This pr*ck caused absolute gridlock in the car park, and he wasn't going to move until he'd parked. Quite ironic, but when a space did appear, he pulled forward to reverse in, but he was so slow, the car behind him drove straight into the space, which caused a bit of light relief, but of course, he just waited until another space appeared.

What did the dozens of security guards do? The walked straight past the ignorant git causing the problem, and started waving arms, blowing whistles at the rest of us, indicating that we should move forward :? Fortunately, I wasn't in any hurry, so just turned off the engine, and enjoyed the TIT show.

Not long returned from south of town and Petchkasem Road was tailing back to HH hospital from the main lights in town.
Having said that, it moved reasonably OK and once past MV we only had to wait for maybe 3 changes of lights before turning left.
All-in-all, a delay of maybe 15 mins which wasn't too bad especially as the songthaew was crammed full with Thai eye candy. At one point, the driver braked really hard and I (seated) fell into the laps of the two girls next to me!! Profuse apologies which were accepted and a ride home with a big smile on my face.
There are some advantages to the traffic!!

Those days with heavy traffic: Don't use your car, take your motobike.
Security guards at Market village are idiots who only knows to use their whistles.
Policemen are doing what they can, that means not much. So learn to help yourself like Thai people and long time residents.

How many years does it take before you become a long time resident ?

I think it took me about one weekend to work out that it was better to drive down town during the week if you had the choice!

I have to admit that the strangest thing about the whole situation struck me as being why anyone in their right mind would drive to MV on a long holiday weekend! (No offence, BB...)
This is the way

No offence taken. I was told that we were going down to buy a new pressure washer (which we didn't actually use until today). When my wife decides she's going somewhere, I'm not man enough to argue.

It was worth it, just to see the car steal the space the ignorant git had been waiting so long for, and the verbal confrontation that followed. Then the security guards walking straight past the black Bangkok plated pick-up causing total gridlock and their frantic efforts trying to make the hundred or so stationery cars to move past the obstacle. I'm surprised nobody thought of hiring a helicopter to lift us over the immovable object, or maybe they could erect a temporary ramp to get people past ignorant Bangkokians. Mind you, if I'd driven from Bangkok for a piece of KFC, maybe I'd have been just as ignorant.

It was nice weather, not too hot, the view was nice and the entertainment first class. The alternative would have been sitting at home getting nagged that we needed a new pressure washer. A no brainer.

[Edit] The stupid thing is that we could have walked there and back in less time than it took the ignorant git to park his car. Mind you, given the choice of watching some young girl knock out a few tunes on a piano, or the show we saw, I'd opt for the roof top every time

so you don't have to be "a long time resident" if you just use your head

We have a car, motorbike and bikes and use what suit's us for transport, and if we have to go we go.

If that's the young 8 year old your talking about, I wouldn't let her dad hear that comment. She's quite an accomplished pianist. I've heard her play 'The Flight of the Bumblebee' quite competently which is no mean task.

Edit: Of course, if it was someone else then I retract the above.

I think I qualify after ten years and I knew enough to not leave the house over the last 3 days and will not leave it tomorrow. If you've been here a while you learn to stock up before these holidays and use the time to stay home and enjoy a relaxing few days with family, a good book, and the TV.
My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
