jelly fish danger

Post by gardenman »

For three months now,as normal at this time of year, the sea is full of these dirty stinging jellyfish,my son has been stung twice in three months, the thais on the beach will not warn you, learn yourself,do not let your children in the sea at this time of year, unless you want to go through the pain of hearing your child scream in pain,as the doctors scrapes out the infected wound.sometimes it can turn real nasty.
At this time of year, its just luck if you dont get stung,i,ve never been stung, but i don´t like the odds, when it comes to children.

I,ve roasted the wife, not her fault i know,it just seems to happen when im not looking after the kids,

Where does all hua hin, human waste get dumped,is it the same as karon beach in phuket,in the sea, without much treatment or does hua hin have a more advanced system,im not letting my kids in the sea, agian till i find out,for all parents based here,i think its something we should no.

"Jellyfish or Portuguese Man-of-War Reactions
The jellyfish and Portuguese man-of-war have long, stinging tentacles. They produce lines of redness and burning pain. Sometimes they cause generalized symptoms, such as weakness, chills, fever, or vomiting.

First Aid:

Scrape off any stinging tentacles with the edge of a credit card or knife. Don't scrub the area because that can trigger the stingers.
Neutralize the venom with a continuous application of vinegar for 30 minutes.
Apply 1% hydrocortisone cream (no prescription needed) four times a day for a few days to reduce itching.
Call Your Child's Physician Immediately If:

Any generalized symptoms, such as weakness, chills, fever, or vomiting, have developed."
don´t trust the story coming out of london.

If man was meant to be in the sea it would have fins, a swim bladder and would smell bad.

Leave the sea to fish. Don't forget they f**k, fart, shit and piss in it, and on top of all this humans chuck effluence into it.

Yes, jellyfish can be a problem at this time of year when the swells further out wash them inshore. Most of the year you'll see some beached, but in the main they're non stinging.
The ones to watch out for are the small stingers. Maybe this is what got your son, Gardenman. They're always out there, but normally too far offshore to bother bathers - a couple of windsurfers I met earlier in the year had been badly stung. They'll be scarred for life.
A lot of the hotels have warning signs up, but only for their residents as they walk onto the beach. The fact that The Marroit and Chiva Som have nets out all year round is testament to the creatures being there.

a good tip for jelly fish stings
1st choice vinegar if at hand
2nd urine although it does sound a bit on the weird side it does neutralize the enzymes from the sting ,, not quite the thing you would brag about , urinating on your friend / child due to being stung by a jelly fish but it does work !

Guess haven’t been on any thing if I had I wouldn’t share it with you ,your bad enough without any thing to stimulate your senses ...it is a fact that urine is the best and readily available first aid for jelly fish stings I am sure any other divers out on the forum will confirm this, and it’s free
It’s on the net too http://www.discoveringhawaii.com/SF_Med ... yFish.html

What? The walking encyclopedia was on the wrong page?

Treatments do largely depend on the type of jellyfish though, one of the most deadly - irukandji or box jellyfish found in Australia (NOT Hua Hin) requires vinegar treatment while for Portuguese Man of War do not use vinegar; experiments have shown that vinegar sets off the nematocysts. Instead, just rinse the area with seawater. Fresh water is probably ok, though some concern has been voiced that it can also set off nematocysts by osmosis so best use the salty stuff!

Finally I can say something good about Pattaya in that there are no jellyfish at all. Not even around the outer islands from my experience. Good thing too or the local punters would be trying to date them? LOL. Pete

It's not bad now but wait until high season when all the hotels start to pump. That is, if there is water and a high season at all. Recent tests have shown that the water off Jomtien beach is now much worse than Pattaya bay. Go figure. Pete

I thought the Jelly fish season in HH start on July must be wrong then... But I call HH is Jelly beaches ... Many big dead jellies along the beach at night time.

I think Dr.Dave was right about the Urine one, in Vietnam ( yah only in the countrysides) they drink children urin to cure fever and use it as a massage "oil" if you get pain in your mussel (not sure about the spelling here). he he :D
I'm adorable crazy ! :-)

 I always bring with me burn aid kit, works on the jellyfish in HH.
Vinegard is useful as well, but prefer burn aid kit.
It's some sort of gel with aloe vera and something else.

But try to stay away from the jellyfish, causes at lot of trouble and could make your holiday liken a disaster.

I am never going to have a massage in Vietnam ever after your comment
Thank you linktolinh for that thought !

Many medical people will disagree with the urine theory and say it is a Placebo and disregard, Urine contains ammonia which neutralizes the stings, a note.. Only use Male urine, females are more prone to urinary tract infections which can go un noticed leading to infection in the areas stung ( sorry girls your urine is no good )
If you do intend to swim in the sea in Hua Hin an Idea would be to wear longer shorts and a T-shirt to reduce the chances of stinging from the Jellies on the more sensitive parts of the body (torso, upper legs etc) its also a good prevention for the kids getting sunburn to much to quickly, I know from personal experience whilst in Curacao and Bonaire…
