Bkk Airport Customs

Post by tuktukmike »

Just curious if anyone else has had this experiance.

On my way back from UK this time had my usual stopover in Dubai and bought my usual amount of Superkings. (cigarettes)

When i was going through customs at BKK i was stopped due to the fact i had rather large duty free bags from Dubai, they informed me i was somewhat over the limit on my cigarettes which of course i knew.

I told them i did not like the local ciggs due to the fact they gave me a sore throat and could i pay the tax on them so i could keep them.

I was asked how much i would pay and i promptly pulled out a couple of £20 pound notes, he smiled took the money and told me to carry on!!!!!

This at a major international airport, if only Heathrow was like this we would all be happier, i felt that at last there is something really positive about the tea money situation in Thailand.

What do others think?

Mike.

This is Thailand Mike, most flights from Dubai get very close scrutiny and im sure they do their job very well ,BKK airport have caught a host of smugglers coming into TH from Dubai and other arab countries obviously you weren’t smuggling anything illegal or you wouldn’t have got out of the airport you just hadn’t paid the import tax ,you should have asked for a receipt to confirm payment of duty ,you don’t ask you don’t get .maybe next time leave room in your hand baggage and stash the haul out of sight

Hi again Dave,

Are you stalking me???

The real point was that i was very very happy to hand over such a small sum of money to bring in so many, hence my comment about Heathrow.

And yes i think after 7 years of having to deal with Thai customs i am indeed aware this is Thailand, but thanks for the reminder.

There is actually a set fine for cigarettes brought in to los over the duty free allowance.
I think it's 5 or 10 Baht per cigarette.
So, perhaps you got away lightly, Mike?

Mike,

If you spend 40 UK dollars in addition to what you paid at Dubai (Dubai or were they free) then you smoke too much. If you insist on smoking such large quantities of the Superqueens and are obviously spending too much money then come to me. I am the sole Hua Hin importer of London ciggies. They are made from the finest Virgin tobacco and come in a very pretty gold box which will impress everybody that sees you with a pack.

Better still give up smoking and spend your money on beanz on toast for brekkie, and steak pies, fish and chips (with gravy and curry sauce of course) for dinner. You will live longer and will be infinetly more prosperous.

Am I on the wrong forum or worse still the wrong planet.

Hi Guess,

They sell those London cigarettes in the supermarket going down towards the beach, or used to.

Never liked them to be honest, so i always stock up on my favorite brand on my way home to Thailand,

The price of this brand is very cheap in dubai as unlike Heathrow they really are duty free in Dubai , anyway this is my only vice and why not allow myself this pleasure.

I dont go out getting drunk and wanting to fight the world and doing loads of damage to my liver like many others may do, but i am sure i will get a reply from the anti smoking lobby now for my comments.

And i also think we all inhale far more dangerous chemicals from Dave,s vespa than from my cigarettes.

Mike,

Twist of fate.

There were a few inbound tourists at BKK Airport being searched when I arrived last week, Dubai flights indeed are held under scrutiny!
It seemed the luckster gods were smiling as I passed through the 'green gaunlet' without a hitch! Or so I though...
As while I was exiting the taxi to board the bus to Hua Hin, I donned my bergen/Rucksack, 2nd RuckSack and laptop. Then with the bus honking the thais shouting at me to get onboard I neglected to pick up the 200 extra smokes!
The Gods did indeed have sport with me that day!
