Jet Harris - RIP

Post by margaretcarnes »

For those who remember - Jet Harris, bass guitarist with the Shadows from 1959 to 1962, died Friday aged 71.
Jet played on Apache, Frightened City and FBI among many other hits, with a heavy bass style which in those days likened him to Duane Eddy. It was reported at the time that some other band members were unhappy that he would rock up the bass until it almost took over. It didn't stop them having a string of Number Ones, but along with Cliffs reported affair with Jets' wife probably contributed to him leaving the band and going solo for a while. He continued to have hits in his own right - and style - with Besame Mucho and The Man with the Golden Gun before joining forces with Tony Meehan, who had been the Shadows' drummer, to produce the duos best known hit Diamonds. (While the Shadows themselves went through a bad patch of more pop-ee stuff with some painful Bruce Welch vocals.)
Jet gave up music for a while but did release an excellent album 'Inside' which was recorded live inside a UK prison, replaying the old hits as they were meant to be. His final contribution to the music world was the album The Journey in 2007 - 2 years before the final Cliff and Shadows tour which, to the dismay of many fans, Jet was not invited to join.
Rest in peace.

One of the all time great bass guitarists.
I did not know about him not been invited on the last Cliff and The Shadows tour, that seems a real shame.

Rest in Peace

Right dozer - if it hadn't been for that I would have forked out the £125 plus to go!
