Great Website for Used Cars
Great Website for Used Cars
Found this excellent website today while mucking about, it's seems to be a 'master directory/database' of used cars from the larger showrooms around the Bangkok area, and also Pattaya/Rayong: http://www.one2car.com/
Whilst it's mostly in Thai it's very easy to navigate (I can't read any Thai), important stuff like car names are in English. You can type in a make/model manually or pick them from a drop down list, even select the year range. There seems to be a few hundred dealers listed, so probably thousands of cars, I like the way the results are in one standard format with exactly the same 12 'shots' used for each cars' photo gallery.
The website also hosts pages on their site for many of the showrooms, so you can see exactly what cars they have, their address, finance details with downpayment and term amounts. Handy if planning a trip up to a certain part of Bangkok and sussing out a list of cars across a few showrooms in the same general area.
Handy price guide of sorts too, especially for the popular Asian manufacturers as so many come back on a search.

Always thought the basic finance details for Farangs was:
There is none

Generally that would be the case but not always. Foreigners can and do get car finance if you have a credit history with a Thai bank that meets their criteria, and in my experience their criteria is nothing remotely high and is more to do with how many times you visit the ATM more than what you earn. If you transferred 1m Baht a month into your Thai bank for 6 months and otherwise hardly touched the account you probably wouldn't get finance even though you had a balance of 6m Baht, but if you only had 50k Baht to your name and drew some out every day at 23:55pm then put it back in them deposit machines at 5 past midnight every other day for 6 months you would have a high enough credit score to obtain certain types of finance. This scenario (not the above hypotheticals) I've actually seen work and heard banks' reps advise.tonymaroni wrote:Always thought the basic finance details for Farangs was:

Usually but not always a WP is required, ditto Thai guarantor usually but not always. You can also be the guarantor for a Thai wife even if she has no job or income here and nor do you, we personally done the latter a week after we first arrived on a Ford Escape. All this mostly seems to apply to main dealerships on new cars where they have special arrangements with a finance company/small bank (Thanachart bank, Kiatnakin bank etc) rather than one of the big 'high street' banks. Dealers and finance guys being on certain commission deals seems to be an important ingredient.
You absolutely won't find any kind of consistency, standard set of parameters or clear guidelines ofcourse, and I get the impression a Thai wife is a major factor, maybe from the point of view that they think you're more settled and lees likely to sod off, they always seem to wanna see where you live etc, and never been any mention of tea money which is a first.
Also it may be that a farang would get turned down today, then accepted a few years later after the wife had been paying off a loan even if his credit rating wasn't as good as first time around. As I say, no consistency, and clear as mud as usual.

So I guess the car is actually in the wifes name and not yours the Farang, correct?
I've been here 9 years and I've never seen or heard of it but agree there are no hard and fast rules in the LOS.
Perhaps another Farang could chime in as to how he obtained financing for a vehicle in his name. I'd be interested to hear his acount of how he did it.

Re: Great Website for Used Cars
Yes, good guess. That's what usually happens when a Thai applies to buy a car in their name!! And as you highlighted in bold, I'd only been in Thailand 7 days, thought it might be a bit previous at that pointtonymaroni wrote:So I guess the car is actually in the wifes name and not yours the Farang, correct?

Type "Car finance Thailand" into google and you can read accounts from farangs who have, the several different finance companies they did it with, what documents were required, how much down etc.
Or try Toyota Leasing Thailand, their website has details of documents required from 'foreigner applicants': http://www.tlt.co.th

Re: Great Website for Used Cars
I did Google "Car finance Thailand"
Only one real success story for my situation. Retired no WP, no Thai Credit card etc. They sure put you through a lot of hoops. The Thai guarantor etc.
The 100K down for a 80K credit card.
Oh well I've a Honda Accord paid cash for it 100K runs great, 1989 year. Looks like I'll keep it for awhile.
Thanks

Re: Great Website for Used Cars
To be honest Tony, I wouldn't much fancy loaning 500k-1M Baht on a depreciating asset to a foreigner who's never worked in my country and had no intention too, doesn't have a great credit rating as a natural consequence, that wants to pay me back over 5 years but only has residency status for the next 7 months, and who don't much fancy the idea that a local person guarantees the repayments.tonymaroni wrote:Only one real success story for my situation. And they've probably noticed over the past few years how good we are at handling debt, not to mention our crashing currency. I think a lot of the reason things are so stringent for us is because they learnt their lesson in the late 90's, their banking and financial systems underwent a massive change of tact, that's why they're going through it relatively unscathed this time round.
Sorry to ramble on Tony and nice to hear you've got yourself sorted out with a good deal anyway. Happy New Year to ya

Re: Great Website for Used Cars
I surfed the webpage using Google Chrome, which at the top gave me the option of instant translation to English. It works nicelySuper Joe wrote:Found this excellent website today while mucking about, it's seems to be a 'master directory/database' of used cars from the larger showrooms around the Bangkok area, and also Pattaya/Rayong: http://www.one2car.com/

But that is not my situation. I'm retired here 9 years which should count for something. It does not.Super Joe wrote:To be honest Tony, I wouldn't much fancy loaning 500k-1M Baht on a depreciating asset to a foreigner who's never worked in my country and had no intention too, doesn't have a great credit rating as a natural consequence, that wants to pay me back over 5 years but only has residency status for the next 7 months, and who don't much fancy the idea that a local person guarantees the repayments.tonymaroni wrote:Only one real success story for my situation. I have a Thai bank account history that goes back to 1997. Does not count for anything.
Provable retirement income over 120,000 Baht a month. That does not count.
The reason they want the Thai guarantor is they can sue them easier and with more recourse than me, not because they are more trustworthy for a loan.
Agreed that their banking system went through a crisis and they have learned to handle things better. But I think other than George Soros the crisis was more Thai than Farang caused.
Oh, on that Toyota lease website how did you get the English turned on? Everything I clicked on was only in Thai.
Thanks for topic that is a service to the Forum. Likewise a Happy New Year to you.

Re: Great Website for Used Cars
I would have thought those things do or would count but they seem to want their guarantor with foreigners without WP's, if that's what their head office rules say then they're not going to take the risk of a bollo**ng from H.O. because they decided to take your case on its merit. That seems to be the way it is over here, one bit of paper missing and the whole thing's out the window. They often want guarantor's for Thais too as my wife's done it for a couple of her friends and it's pretty painless, I did it for the wife when we first arrived based on bank statements of income from the UK job I'd just left. It's mentioned briefly in the Toyota link below.tonymaroni wrote:But that is not my situation. I'm retired here 9 years which should count for something. It does not.

At the end of the day it's an unsecured loan and although you've been here an age compared to most, we're still seen as 'temporary', rightly or wrongly, but I agree with you that your circumstances should be fine. Maybe they're getting you mixed up with Tony Soprano

No I don't think it does have an English 'switch', but every now and then there's the odd paragraph in English, here's a link to the bit I was referring to, although asks for WP so may be no good to yourself. The main dealerships seem to be the best route because they want the sale/commission, they're matey with the finance guy etc etc: http://www.tlt.co.th/customer_relation_term.phptonymaroni wrote:Oh, on that Toyota lease website how did you get the English turned on? Re: Great Website for Used Cars
I bought a new Honda in Hua-Hin earlier this year with finance from Kasikorn bank. I do have a work permit but the car is in my name and I paid 20% deposit and financed over 4 years with no Thai Guarantor. It was pretty straight forward and approved quite quickly. I think a W.P. is a big help.
Re: Great Website for Used Cars
I always use bahtsold .com, not a good looking site but everything is there.
Re: Great Website for Used Cars
Here's a couple of websites I have used here and been very happy with (so far)
excuse the spaces! not allowed to send links still
truck2hand .com
thaisecondhand .com
All got pics and prices but may need help from local to tell ya where exactly the items are for sale.
Hope this helps, I know it took me a long time to find out "how to" over here.

Re: Great Website for Used Cars
yes thanx for the info,i had the pleasure of heading into B/K looking for a vehicle as not too many 2nd hand cars in Hua Hin,and the ones on the net most have been sold, and not taken off the site. Back to B/K what an experience, ended up at Sukumvit,a few car yards on both sides of the road, but beware speedo readings must be checked, two i liked had low k/m,but a check of the glove box, showed tyres fitted at a much later mileage?? big rewind, when quizzed on this, not happy Jan?? but did manage to find what i was after, then my Thai lady went into bat,and i was happy, then attempted my first drive in LOS,good place to start, find your way out of Bangars to get to Hua Hin.....never ever again.
Take care lads, thanx for all your info while i was in Australia. Now looking forward to a long stay in Hua Hin
