Superstars Venus and Sharapova to light up Hua Hin Centennial
More than Bt20 million will be spent to stage the Centennial Invitation match between former world No 1s Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams in Hua Hin on January 2.
Co-hosted by the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand and the city of Hua Hin, the exhibition will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the resort town. According to LTAT president Suwat Liptapanlop, the two tennis queens will be paid more than Bt10 million in appearance fees.
"The meet is designed to create awareness of tennis among fans but also to boost Hua Hin tourism,'' said Suwat.
The friendly match will be held on a temporary court with a capacity to seat 4,000 people at the Hua Hin Centennial Park. The Russian cover girl and the American big-hitter played an exhibition in Chiang Mai four years ago. For this visit they will play a best-of-three-set match (super tie-break for the third set).
The marquee match will be followed by a one-set mixed doubles match featuring Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke. Channel 3 will broadcast the matches live from 3pm.
Sharapova is due to touch down on New Year's eve, Williams a day later.
Fans can buy tickets at Bt1,500 from November 21 at all Thaiticketmajor outlets and Major Hua Hin.

Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova will warm-up for the Australian Open with a exhibition match in Thailand to mark the 100th anniversary of the Hua Hin seaside resort, according to organisers.
The tennis superstars will spend New Year's Eve in Hua Hin before their match on January 2, which will be followed by a mixed doubles clash alongside local heroes Paradorn Srichaphan and Danai Udomchoke.
"I am delighted to be able to spend my New Year in Hua Hin, Thailand," said Sharapova, who is battling to find her best form again after arthroscopic surgery a year ago to repair her right shoulder.
"I am sure it will be an exciting time and I am looking forward to competing in the Centennial Invitation."
Williams, who lost to sister Serena in the final of the season-ending WTA Championships this month, is also excited.
"I have very fond memories of my previous visits to Thailand and am really looking forward to returning for the Centennial Invitation match in Hua Hin," she said.
After their match, both players move to Hong Kong for the Tennis Classic team event, which features players representing Europe, Russia, the Americas and the Asia-Pacific.
They then head to Australia for the opening Grand Slam of the season.

tennis courts
the match will be played on courts being built just over flyway[brit word,in american bridge] south of town. went to check they were building them in the right direction[north-south]. the new golf driving range on main road built 2 great courts but alas in a east-west direction rendering them unplayable. fear of being an international laughing stock ,with Venus and Maria unable to see the ball in the sun, on tv i went and found the builders working there. a guy said they were indeed north-south with a slight correct angle to north-east. he showed me blueprints of facility. they are making stadium seating for 4,000. great addition to hua hin. multi-purpose use stadium for all sorts of things. now if they can only make surface slow, add sand, and not like glass type courts at sofitel everything will be peachy.
Bill, where exactly Just over the flyway? East or west side of the road, Soi number? Past the new big restaurant or behind the Mobile station???

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
the answer is
coming from town to the right just after bridge.
Re: tennis courts
I've never heard "Flyway" in my life, us Brits call it a bridge or as in HH it's a flyover.bill wrote:flyway[brit word,in american bridge0
