Here's one to get a discussion going.............

Those who have read the UK news lately will surely have something to say...................?

If saying..."my paki friend".............is a racist remark, or calling a friend by his nickname, "Sooty", how would we consider the term......"farang"???????

I’m no expert on languages, but from its common usage I’ve always considered ‘Farang’ to be more of a financial term than a racial one with negative overtones.
I suppose the nearest term in English accountancy would be ‘cash’ which is usually defined as current assets comprised of currency or currency equivalents that can be accessed immediately or near-immediately, which seems to fit the way that ‘Farang’ is normally used.

Regardless of possible derivations of the word "farang", I regard the word used in my direction as such:
If you know my proper name and call me farang, then it's insulting.
If I'm in restaurant or similar and the staff don't know my name and point me out as "that farang over there", then it's OK.

farang is a word that is contextual.

It can be a simple reference: "this drink for that farang over there" .... in that context it is not an insult

It can be an insult: "You stupid f****ing farang" ... see its the context that matters

the thing is farag is a sort of generic term - it means foreigner... it doesnt single out an ethnic group...its all of us that aren't Thai

it also doesn't mean "foreign devil" like gaijin (japan) or gwailo (china)....

however...back to the Royal Clown......

through common usage and abuse, words like nigger, paki, kike, wop and spick have lost any contextual value, and are now insults.

The word nigger is an interesting one....a word used by some black people in the US and wannabe cool kids in the UK. Their reasoning is that they have adopted a term of hatred and made it their own.... thing is I have black mates back in the UK who hate the term, and get proper upset at hearing it used..... they, like me, see it still as a term of insult, and hate the fact it is used by other black people.

the problem about words is that whist the Royal Clown is only "racist" in his inbred stupidity and lack of decent upbringing, such words in the hands of demagogues end up "justifying" genocides such as in Armenia, Europe, The Balkans, Rawanda and Darfur.

What a load of bollocks, how does calling someone from Pakistan a Paki hurt them? The UK has gone mad with political correctness.

A young man, be him a royal or a commoner, horsing around with a video camera! The bullshit papers get hold of it and blow it right out of proportions. If he was just a commoner, there wouldn’t have been any fuss. I’d like to know who it was that got paid for the footage because thats all that it's about money.

Sandman you sound very bitter. Were you never young? Your remarks about the British royals, it’s a good job that you’re not Thai. Speaking that way about the Royal family here, you would have been put to death because of the lèse-majesté law, be careful.

The word Farang comes from many years ago when the French were in this region. The Thais upon seeing Caucasians for the first time called the Frogs Farang-set (Frances) and as most things in Thailand, the word has been shortened to Farang.

The only thing that offends me about being called a Farang is that they may think I am a Frog, Kraut, Taffy, Yank, Jock, Paddy, but I am an English man and proud of it!

Bill

yes mate I was young, and I saw first hand the crap that my Asian mates used to get every day at school off ignorant swine like the Royal Buffoon.

Vijay, who now lives in London, tells me he still gets called Paki occasionally, usually by dumbass teenagers, sometimes by adults. If you think its acceptable to use the word Id suggest you have a few pints with him, call him that and see what happens.....Ill stand in the corner with a mop and bucket.

The really funny bit is Vijay is ethnically Ugandan Indian...he still gets called Paki tho......

Get real Bill....you and I both know the word is an insult....always was, always will be. Do you call people in wheelchairs "raspberrys" or "crips"...no....why? Because its insulting.

If I have a problem with the Royal family, then maybe its because I resent the fact that for 20 odd years some of my tax money went to supporting the richest family in the UK whist they jaunt round the world and breed dysfunctional brain dead little brats like said Buffoon. When they start acting with the decorum and professionalism that being national figureheads requires, and stop sponging off the civil list, Ill start paying them respect.

In contrast we have the King of Thailand. A man who embodies living dhamma. A man who invents tools and techniques that mean the poorest in his land, the farmers, have their lives made easier. A man who cares about his country and all its citizens. A man who deserves respect. Whilst there is little or no free reporting in respect of the royals here, I doubt severely the King or his family would ever call the southern Muslim Thais "Ragheads".

Racism is a real threat to social and civil stability. Right now Europe is like a powder keg...racist attacks are increasing across all of Europe, particularly in France, Germany, Holland and the UK.

Not good....and acceptance of the use of words that fuel hate or division by stupid little prats who should know better wont help. Neither will the preferential treatment he will get at the hands of his superior officers.

Sandman I did write something else because I was angry with what you said about standing in the corner with a mop and bucket. You don’t know me at all, don’t judge because I too have friends all race, creeds and colours. But just after writing it the following message came through to me via email.

Am I right in thinking that PAKI is short for Pakistani? Just an abbreviation?

Prince Harry calls a mate "Our little Paki friend" and is forced to apologise two years later. This guy was a mate of his for heavens sake!

Am I right in thinking that "Brit" is short for British? Should the Sun Newspaper be forced to apologise every time it prints the word Brit or The Brits are coming? Is the word Brit offensive?

Is "Scot" Offensive? "The Scots are coming". Another Sun Newspaper Football Clash Headline classic.

What about Ozzie? Kiwi? Pommie? Limey? Where or when will this lunacy end? The Cornish call all holiday makers "Grockles" Anything wrong with that?

If a Pakistani called you "His Brit friend" Would you feel offended? Would you demand an apology on National TV?

Of course not.

Del Trotter refers to "The Paki Shop" in one episode of Only Fools and Horses. (Now overdubbed for UK Gold with the offending word taken out). (The episode when they build a nuclear fall out shelter).
Should Sir David Jason now apologise? Should the writer John Sullivan apologise? Should the BBC apologise?

What about the Fuzzywuzzies? "Dads Army"

What about "You stupid Krout"? Fawlty Towers.
Both still being broadcast regularly with no overdub.

The Idiots are at it again trying to stir up racial hatred. It's just madness surely?

I'm happy being a BRIT, BRITISH, ENGLISH, POMMIE, LIMEY or whatever. I don't care a fig.
I only care when I'm called a racist.

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO NEXT YEARS "BRIT AWARDS" ON THE TV. LUCKILY, THANKS TO THE ZEALOTS, RACISTS AND BIGOTS THERE WILL NEVER BE A "PAKI AWARDS". Oh no indeed, because all the Pakis will be at The Brit Awards. And us Brits won't mind at all will we?

There's something rotten in the barrel and nobody in government or local politics has the guts to stand up and say "GROW UP THE LOT OF YOU".

If you agree then pass this on. If not then you still have the democratic right to delete it. (Well for the time being anyway).

Used like that, not at all.
The Prince should of grown a spine and defended his words, instead of kow-towing to the PC cancer spread across the UK.

Didn`t one of the Princes in Afghanistan call their enemy `Terry Taliban`? On behalf of all the Terences in the world I should like to apologise on behalf on whichever Prince it was and hope you were not traumatised or suffer from any long~lasting ill effects.
BTW BB Grockles is a Devonian expression, I believe the Cornish eqivalent is an Emmit. Some of my best friends are Grockles.

The Urine test
THIS GUY MAKES A GOOD POINT
This was written by a rig worker in North Sea - he makes a lot of sense!

I work, they pay me. I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit.

In order to earn that pay cheque, I work on a rig for a drilling contractor.

I am required to pass a random urine test, with which I have no problem.
What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people who don't have to pass a urine test.

Shouldn't one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare cheque because I have to pass one to earn it for them?
Please understand that I have no problem with helping people get back on their feet.

I do on the other hand have a problem with helping someone sit on their ass drinking beer and smoking dope.
Could you imagine how much money the government would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a welfare cheque?

Please pass this along if you agree, because something has to change in the UK, and soon!
