Fast Food
Fast Food
Just returned from my third trip to H.H. and was horrified to see a Burger King outlet. These fast food outlets came to Koh Samui just over two years ago which meant that I was not going to return there. I hope there
will be no more opening in H.H. I could never understand why people travel to exotic Thailand to eat fast food. Does anyone know of any plans
to open more of these junk outlets.

Fast Food
Hi Len
As far as i know the Mcdonalds 'trailer' has left now i believe it was a test run, but as Lev says if you live here sometimes just sometimes after many thai meals the Burger King is a nice treat, but i do understand where youre coming from. regards Dave

Yes, there are lots of us living here and occasionally fast food is ok. I wouldn't visit a McDonalds or BG either if I was on a two week trip to exotic Australia. (P.S. Aussieland is exotic to me as I come from the other side of the globe

Christ if you refuse to go somewhere that has a Western Fast Food outlet you've just made your last trip to Thailand.
No one has a gun to your head saying go eat there.
Many Thai people love eating at these places, I do occassionally....(only BK never MacD's)...I have 2 children, difficult stuffing "Gung Cher Naam Plaa" down a 3 yo's throat. They must be profitable or they wouldn't be here.
Not my choice of Thai cuisine, but I'm not leaving on their account.

I agree with it being a good hangover food although when you have finished you wonder why you bothered. As my wife is thai I only eat thai
food even here in "exotic aussieland". The point I was trying to make is
I hope H.H. does not have these outlets on every second corner and lose the old charm that made it attractive enough for you to want to settle there. I will be moving back in two years and would hate to see a major
facelift to this unique town.

In their pursuit of happiness the natives have propensity to strive towards new things
they consider better than the old ones. Often in reality it means appearance and
proliferation of western eye-watering fenomena such as junk food outlets,
service stations and convenience stores.
(How many 7-11s there are in HH now? 8? 10?)
I traveled quite much around Asia 1962 - 67 and must say that things really have changed since.

And do you know what? I'm so used to seeing KFC everywhere in LOS that I never gave a thought to the fact it was new to HH when I was there a few weeks ago! Didn't go in, mind - well, not in HH at least (ate KFC in Saraburi taking refuge from a storm and at the airport before going home!).
What is it they say about familiarity breeds......??
I didn't notice a McSplodge though?

Talk is cheap
I have to say: it's nice to chomp down on a greasy burger and munch a bunch of fries once in a while. And yes - with that heavy sinking feeling in your gut - you wonder why you did it shortly afterwards. But coming from Canada, where (and this might be a good thing) there is no discernable unique Canadian culture or cuisine (pancakes, maple syrup, bacon and Hockey aside) the closest thing to "comfort food" would be those golden arches or something of a similar nature. I guess these places are everywhere now, no escaping them. And they must be profitable, or they'd shut down. Hopefully, these fast food places will fulfill just a tiny need - like a hangover - and will not infest our beautiful LOS. Cheers all!
