- His Majesty the King Bhumibol Abdulayej is living in Hua Hin
- Immigration Office moved to Soi 102
- Villa Market opened last July
- Kim's Kitchen changed of owner
- the klong between Soi 6 and Pala-U road has been cleaned

What else ?

The more factor......
- more building
- more traffic
- more fly tipping (backroads)
- more internet cafe's
- more rubbish (especially the beach in certain parts)
- more secondhand car showrooms
- more furniture shops
- more garden centers
- more shopping (extension to top floor in market village)
- more people upset by the currency rate to the Thai Baht

Lots more of all kinds of things... but it is still a great place to take your holidays, or retire early, like some lucky beggars have!!

Agree with Paderborn.

It's gone from a small resort to a mid-sized resort, imo.
Better selection and quality of shopping, eating and other services, worse traffic, parking

Still got a way to go before its a full blown resort imo, some like it better before when it was quieter, some say its too quiet. Horses for courses and all that.

I hate to say it, but I feel the smiles have gone. :(

I'm generally an up-beat smiley person - but a lot of the farangs I see look downright miserable. A smile or 'Hi' from me is usually ignored (perhaps they think I'm the local looney?!) Maybe it's rubbed off on the Thais?

I sometimes want to say to the holiday-makers 'Come on, this is the Land of Smiles. Why do you look so miserable?' Quite frankly I don't blame the Thais - if they have to put up with surly, rude visitors, then it's obviously reflected in the way they react to farangs.

I fully agree with you. I just hope I will be able to meet you, when I say I, I mean I and my wife, during our next stay in HH...

It would be a pleasure. Just PM me when you're next in the area. You and Mr.VS can swap recipes (he's a bit of a gourmet) and I can practice my school-girl French.

Sorry. (Can't find the back to topic emoticon...)

Oasisdave: Just please smile and find a place outside the metropolis. There you will find the smiling Thais...

You'll probaly find the biggest difference is Selakam is now all lit up and "busy". I remember not so long ago after Goanna's the whole street was in darkness.

For me the biggest change by far is the volume of traffic. Parking is virtually impossible down town and I have recorded it taking 45 minutes to drive from just north of Hua Hin, through town, to Takiab - a distance of around 10km.

The nightlife area is pretty much the same, with a whole bunch of places changing hands as usual. There are more housing developments stretching further into the hinterlands so roads that used to be fields are now becoming little 'suburbs' in their own right.

Agree VS, but I'd say the smiles disappeared about 5 years ago!

That said Hua Hin is still a great place and you can easily get away from the little frustrations!

You will probably find quite a few empty houses.

The exchange rate for the Pound Stirling and the Euro have both dropped about 15% in the last month. People maybe can no longer afford the new house they had set their hearts on and I should imagine that there must be quite a few falang sweating at the thought that when they next apply for the renewal of their retirement visa they will no longer have an income of 60,000 Baht a month.
I'm lucky, I have the 800,000 Baht in the bank.
