I've missed a fair bit of the Olympics - the interest just isn't there where it once was. I do generally have it on in the background rather than waiting for specific events that I've either forgotten about or simply hadn't realised were on due to not following schedules.....

However, there's been a few events which in the past I wouldn't have dreamt of watching (some new admittedly). One such event has been the climbing - there was a big thing today as there was a good chance of a British medal.... And didn't he do well!! Hardly the explosive event of the 100m, but hell you've got to admire the skill: -

"Toby 'The Terminator' Roberts, you are the Olympic champion!

Many said Japan's Sorato Anraku was unbeatable heading into these Games but Roberts wasn't having any of that.

Unbelievable."

The "Speed Climbing" however IS "explosive", and have to admit that has been incredible.

Yup, there is a BIG downside with some of the "New Events" also - thankfully, I've managed to avoid the Breakdancing either through luck or judgment... Or perhaps my TV is simply too old to show it!! :neener:

Excellent football final although I was hoping for France to win. Mainly because of Thierry Henry. Have to say Spain is the top country at the moment, controlling the both the national team as well as club football both their male and female teams are top class.

Doesn't this along with the likes of Golf, Basketball (US especially) make a mockery of the Olympics (as previously mentioned by DB)? Wendy Football has enough tournaments as does Golf, Cricket and dare I say Rugby, although the latter is 7's and not in the same league with regards to professionalism or money (and to be honest, far more exciting!! :neener: ).

To a certain extent, yes, I agree. They are allowed to have three over aged players in an Olympics football team, otherwise they are basically U21 teams. I don't know why they let those three to play but I guess the same goes for other team games, they have some over aged players. However, in present days, it's very hard to find any sportsperson who wouldn't be a pro to a certain extent. Maybe those break dancers you guys mentioned earlier so that would explain their participation. :D

I agree in principle, except that both the men's and women's golf events have been a spectacular watch (if golf's your thing, of course), far better than routine golf tour events, and I think even more so so than Open events. The chance of a rare Olympic medal has given it almost Ryder Cup flavour, and every day so far has been really nip and tuck (which can't always be said of the Ryder!).

I was just about to post to say I'm sorry I forgot to mention this sport before. I also didn't think to watch it until the women's final today, but I've enjoyed it so much in the past.

As I said above, there's a couple of sports that I've never watched previously, but the climbing has been superb - one I must admit I'll keep an eye on!! :thumb:

Expect to see my neighbour's grandson at the Olympics in the not too distant future. She is (quite rightly) very proud of him, and I've had video clips and photos rammed down my throat for the last few years...

This might sound a bit churlish, but it's not meant to be. In most sports, the last thing you want is a loser's medal. In rugby world cups, and presumably other sports, the third place play-off is often something players would rather not have. Nobody remembers the runners-up in a golf tournament. And yet I keep seeing that so-and-so has 'won' a silver or bronze medal. I mean, well done and all that, you've done your best and you've earned your silver or bronze, but you haven't 'won' anything, you've lost...

Should I apologise for that?

I saw the ladies 4x100 relay final the other day, and someone remarked that the British girls had been unlucky. There was no luck involved, they simply messed up the baton exchanges, and that's why they didn't get a gold medal. They lost.
