Paris Olympics July/August 2024

Post by pharvey »

Well, it's here once again - The Summer Olympics! This will be the third occasion Paris has hosted the Games since 1900, the last time being a century ago in 1924.

Hopefully, all will be a great success, but there are real issues not least of which being the fallout of the current elections, demonstrations (political, immigration & state and cost of living..... Basically the usual  ). Concerns have been raised over the level of pollution in the Seine River and the condition of other sporting venues as well as the ever-present security risks..... Let's just hope all are controlled/resolved!

Personally, it'll just be the "Opening Ceremony", some of the "Track and Field" and the "Sevens Rugby" that'll be worth a look, but each to their own! :D

"The Paris 2024 Olympic Games will showcase 3,800 hours of live sport and award 329 gold medals in 32 sports over 18 days of competition across the capital and in other parts of France.

Here is all you need to know about the 34th summer Olympics.: -"

That sounds about right. And at the 2028 Olympics you can add cricket to the list.

Oh, I can't wait....
Philistine. You're obviously not watching the test match at Lords. England (& Wales) are giving the Windies a right good spanking.

Oh, I had kept up with the score, but to be fair after the 1st Innings, the liklyhood of the match being "interesting" was fairly low... And on Day 3 it's all over - fair play to England (and Wales :neener: ), but quite honestly it's sad to see the "Windies" that poor...

So the Wendyball and the 7's Rugby begins tomorrow - neither have Team GB.... But I guess it's to be expected when all four Unions need to agree on fielding a team!! :banghead:

Still though, I shall be watching the 7's out of interest!! :thumb:

Do report back about the crowds at these events? It seems not many tickets are being sold, that the usual tourists have been scared off by the olympics and an 'iron curtain' has been constructed around the central areas of Paris, with controlled access, deterring locals from visiting restaurants and the like. Sounds wonderful.

The blame as ever, lies with Macron, for choosing an opening ceremony on the Seine, rather than the usual, more easily controlled, stadium.

Paris is certainly not an area I would want to be at the moment - extortionate prices (above the norm for hotels & restaurants, forget tickets), "No-Go Areas", Security in the extreme (passes required for all - even residents) - reportedly some 45,000 mostly armed Police/Guards, not to mention the "Ring of Steel" as you say. A friend of mine lives on the outskirts of Paris and boarded up his place and went elsewhere weeks ago - I did question him as surely he could have made a fortune through rental. His response was that he was already getting stuffed by insurance and renting his property and the risk of damage would be even more costly.... He's neither a fan of the Olympics or Macron!!

It's a sad state that the world is in at the moment - Conflicts galore, Country-wide Riots, the threat of Terrorism and mass (uncontrolled) Immigration, the latter being both the cause and result of much.... Sorry, that's the Right Wing leaping out

Massive crowd for the Rugby 7's today - and they enjoyed some great games! :thumb: Perfect conditions, great crowd and plenty of sport - not a bad start to events, it must be said! :thumb:

Have not been watching the football, but things seem to have been interesting to say the least....

Argentina v Morocco at Olympics Mired in Chaos Following Pitch Invasion

"The Argentina coach Javier Mascherano said he had never witnessed such a circus after a pitch invasion triggered a dramatic and long-delayed climax to the country’s 2-1 defeat against Morocco in their Olympic opener in Saint-Etienne on Wednesday.

The match on the first day of men’s football at the Games was mired in chaos after a pitch invasion forced it to be suspended for more than an hour. Play eventually resumed behind closed doors and although Cristian Medina thought he had salvaged a 2-2 draw for Argentina, when he scored deep into injury time, the goal was subsequently ruled out for offside by VAR when play resumed for a few minutes after the long stoppage to clear the stadium of fans.

The eventually ruled-out equaliser had sparked wild scenes at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Étienne, with objects also thrown at the South American players by spectators in what had been an angry climate throughout.

Argentina were booed by sections of the crowd in what appeared to be a clear response to footage showing their players chanting a song the French Football Federation has labelled “racist and discriminatory” following victory at the Copa América this month.

After Medina’s goal both sets of players were taken off the pitch by the referee, with Paris 2024’s official website deeming the contest to have been “interrupted”. It was eventually announced that the final three minutes of the game would be completed behind closed doors, which proved the case – but only after Medina’s 106th-minute strike was disallowed for an offside infringement in the build-up."

Should never have added pro football to the Olympics. Simple.

Footage has emerged of groups hunting for Jews after the Israel-Mali football game. After the shameful intimidation of an Israeli singer at Eurovision, this was to be expected.

Those who weren't around during WWII often wondered how Hitler managed to get such a mass following. How folk were brainwashed so easily into murderous hatred.

Well, folk need wonder no more, as it's playing out again in plain sight.
I don't trust children. They're here to replace us.
