We used to run tours on both Kaeng Krachaen and Pranburi Dams.
It was not commercially viable in terms tying up two members of staff, my truck all day as well as the boat.

I did not feel that it was justifiable to charge customers when the fishing is basically non existant in terms of customer expectancy.

We now only use the boat for the occasional pleasure trip or if a customer specifcally asks for a trip.

When you go out on a boat on these dams they are beautiful but due to overfishing, catches are few and far between. You will find nets everywhere. There are big snakehead but you have to be lucky to locate them and I would say that to get ANY fish over 1 kilo or two you have about a 5% chance max. We've made 30 or so trips and only got 2 fish worthy of note.

There are plenty of Nin and some Krasoop (Jungle Perch) available from the shores but again not very large - ok to make tom yum, but not much else.

I've had boats on, and off, over the last 30 years and love them. Sometimes fishing gets in the way
Size or quantity of fish has never been a priority for me just being out on the water with a chance to get something. Even though my boat is fully rigged for fishing the Mrs consideres it as a floating sun bathing platform first.

Terry thanks for the info BTW :)

You will have fun with your boat anyway, i'm having fun with mine and going out every week. Maybe it would be cheaper to rent one sometimes if you are not going to use it every week.

heya boys

i have been fishing inshore and offshore hua-hin\dolphin bay area by boat only for many years now
i can honestly say that fishing is actually very productive with the right BOAT, CAPTAIN & GEAR
my personal biggest catch inshore(2nm) was a 20kg+ cobia which jumped back in the water as soon as we got it on the boat(low freeboard), i have pulled many barracuda(sometimes even kingmackerel & barramundi) on lures some over 10kg but usually between 8-4 kg,
and fishing on the reefs large snapper and grouper up to 5kg are catchable, any thing bigger is a major challange as they are extremly powerful fish and will just cut of the line on the rocks my line is 120lb braid and i still lose many fish, i have been fishing all year round and i would say 10 out of 12 months are good in general and thats reef that is only 30-40 mins from the mouth of pranburi river, i was out a week ago caught 12 fish myself 1 salt-water catfish 2kg+ and 3 white snapper over 2kg and another 8 over 1kg each, and lost a quite a few big bites(sharp rocks),

I have been thinking importing my current boat but it would have to be shipped seperatly. I could trade it in for a smaller 19ft that is possable by side mounting in a frame to place it in a 40ft container along with trailer and household goods etc.

Part of the reason to have a smaller boat would be that it's easier to trailer up to Kaeng Krachaen and Pranburi Dams and a 150HP would be more economical than my current 200HP

However I have the option to buy the new outboard here at similar prices to US prices or in HH.

Firstly what is the preferered outboard brand for servicing in HH Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Merc, Evinrude ?

Secondly are outboard prices high in HH like cars

Suzuki is the best, Yamaha is cheaper but good also. Then you have the Honda and the last is Mercury. Evinrude...

lokkol, i have a boat [mod edit - Johan, you have been warned about this before. Inclusion as part of another thread is no different] please, could you come with me and show me where are the big fishes here ? I will let you come absolutely for free, you can even come with a friend.

They are out there mate, get friendly with a few of the local big fishin boats, I have just been given some very good waypoints to add to my GPS and just off from the beach are a few rocky spots where I've had some good Grouper and even a few snapper.
I only catch them for the wife as I don't eat it myself
Barras's are about too.
Johan if ya want I can pass you a few plots for local areas. (but only a few mind you!! )
You may do it faster! But I do it better!

Just found out that there is no extra import duty over the 7% for boats which makes it a bit easier to ship and import over losses of selling and buying another

I was told about that too, But then warned about the A**Holes in the customs dept when you go to pick it up.
The trailer is a hot spot and then the backhanders to actually get it out of the compound was another falling point.
There was a company in the US that had the very boat I wanted at the real price you'd expect to pay and the shipping was very reasonable but the hassle at the customs office was just not worth the effort for me.
If you're doing it, I hope you have better luck than I did and that it goes smoothly for you.

You shouldn't import the trailer, highly taxed. Import the boat is very easy when everything is done correctly and you could save some money.

Just to follow up on Johan's point I was advised as follows:-

There's 10% tax on trailer and custom department tax charge rule. They charge 10% from CIF not trailer cost and if they think that your freight is too low they will estimate new freight cost and use that for that 10% tax.

Hi all,
Would anyone be interested in a deep sea fishin trip?
I find myself with some extra time on my hands (about 3 or 4 months) and wondered if there would be any chance of organising a trip over on the Andaman coast.
I'll try and find out a bit more about it, just thought it might be nice to have a few English speakers on the boat as it's mainly Thai fishermen that I've been told organise these trips and my Thai is poor to say the least.
I'm in Hua hin and will be looking at driving to the launch site so will have a bit of room if anyone fancies a bit of peace away from the wife.
You may do it faster! But I do it better!
