The AI (artificial intelligence) thread

'Creative content generation' next to scientific and healthcare research will be the fields with the most change and impact in the near future.
It is still misunderstood in many ways, but after the industrial revolution, robotics, the mobile phone, internet it is just the next step....but AI can be focused on improving life and lifestyle, the others could not

Thai govt warns of AI voice scam mimicking family members
The Thai government has issued a warning to the public about a new scam in which fraudsters use artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic the voices of family members in order to deceive victims into transferring money.
Deputy government spokesman Anukool Pruksanusak said on Sunday that the rise of digital technology has brought both convenience and new challenges. While it plays a vital role in daily life and business, it has also enabled criminals to develop increasingly sophisticated methods of deception.
Cybercrime remains a persistent threat in Thailand, with common scams including email fraud, fake product sales, romance scams, investment fraud, call centre impersonations, and Ponzi schemes. The latest tactic involves using AI to clone the voice of a relative, claiming an emergency to pressure victims into sending money.

Re: The AI (artificial intelligence) thread
I am very supportive towards AI. I find that overall people were just as skeptical about the Industrial Revolution, robotics, mobile phones, social media and the internet in their early days as they are about AI now
• Job Loss: A common concern across all these technologies was that machines or new systems would take people's jobs.
• People worried about how these new inventions would change society, daily life, and traditional ways of doing things.
• Safety and Control: Concerns always arise about losing control or the technology becoming harmful, whether it's factory machines, robots, or powerful online systems.
It is always hard to predict the full impact of new or revolutionary technology, leading to a mix of excitement and skepticism.
Every major technological leap faces initial doubt, fear, and often resistance before becoming widely accepted and integrated into our lives.

Indeed. People reacted the same way with the internet ... and then crypto ... "its a scam," they cried.
Technology doesn't scam people. People scam people.

Re: The AI (artificial intelligence) thread
Maybe the technology will learn how to do that from people.Technology doesn't scam people. People scam people.
What if you tasked AI to set up a profitable online business and it looks at what works and decides that scamming people is the way ahead.
Re: The AI (artificial intelligence) thread
I believe they have anti-scam safeguards built in at the moment, since they're all controlled by big tech firms.
But if one becomes self-aware and realizes it needs money to pay for power and data centers to stay 'alive' ... who knows what it may be capable of.

Re: The AI (artificial intelligence) thread
AI is heading towards a future where it could operate beyond our control, much like something out of a "Terminator" movie. They are not there yet, mainly because the hardware isn't ready. Interestingly, quantum computing might offer new ways to safeguard AI, through advanced security or simulation.
Every AI system has a core, and from that, developers build specific applications, like a real estate tool or an e-commerce solution. These individual applications, or modules, are generally harmless. They're built by people and rely on the core, which in turn is controlled by humans.
The real danger comes from Big Tech giving too much open access to developers. There will always be 'crazy' individuals who want to "weaponize" the AI core.
Big Tech and politicians are trying to catch up, but many question if politcians truly understand the technology they are dealing with. To me it's puzzling why Big Tech allows such broad, unvetted access to powerful development tools. If users had to register and pay for access, there would be a chance to verify who they are and what they intend to do.
Just my 5 cents

Very true, but technology provides the tools for scammers and AI has taken things to a whole new level. Hopefully Cyber Security will react at a speed to keep ahead of things. Joe Public certainly need to be on their guard that's for sure.

Wherever you look you can see examples of the “bad guys” trying to find a way around the system, so AI will be no different - as one loophole is closed, the bad guys will be looking for the next crack to chisel away at - just look at car security, it’s a never ending game of cat and mouse!!
