Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Again, I'm not anti EV, but have major concerns over the production of critical components and the countries/governments who care far less for the environment over financial gain. EVs are far from the wonder "Green Card" in my book.
Race to Mine Metals for EV Batteries Threatens Marine Paradise
"Stark images, captured from a drone by environmental campaigners and shared with the BBC, appear to show how nickel mining has stripped forests and polluted waters in one of the most biodiverse marine habitats on Earth.
The Raja Ampat archipelago - a group of small islands in Indonesia's Southwest Papua Province - has been dubbed the "Amazon of the Seas".
But mining for nickel - an ingredient in electric vehicle batteries and in stainless steel - has ramped up there in recent years, according to the organisation Global Witness, external.
In a move that was welcomed by campaigners, the Indonesian government this week revoked permits for four out of five mining companies operating in the region."

I’m guessing that photo is a few years old Steve? I worked in Saudi 20 years ago and driving through the Eastern Province this was a familiar sight. Although I believe it still goes on (as a safety measure) moves have been made in recent years to reduce the incidence of “flare-off”, so hopefully this will be less and less of an issue in the future.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Yep, I agree. There's much to be said with regards to the "historical" pollution of ICE (the cars, not Trump and his Administration), but these days things are far different. I have worked within the Mining, Petrochem and Chemical industries all my working life worldwide - ALL are working towards a far lower Carbon Footprint.... Unless you look into the likes of China, India, USA, Indonesia, Russia et al. and those who hang on their collective coattails (Thailand) where they are simply looking at money with complete disregard to the Environment. The likes of Saudi have tried to move away from OIL for many years - though they have a wonderful backup!Dannie Boy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 16, 2025 3:31 am I’m guessing that photo is a few years old Steve? Personally, I would bin UK Labour's idiotic "Zero" or "Green" bollocks and re-open the North Sea Gas and Oil Fields - masses of jobs, huge investment, LESS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT!! and hell, less reliance on others during this period of Tariffs and Warfare.
I can appreciate your true love of EVs Steve, but it's not black and white.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Then again, let's look at the biggest suppliers and biggest polluters on a another scale. Still happy to buy Chinese to save the world?!! OK, it's not just EVs, but it's a big part of things from China, including Solar Panels and charging stations that you rely on. Let's not attempt to get into Microchips, Aluminium or Plastics (though in fairness that also effects ICE cars to a lesser content).
. .
Anywho....

This is supposed to be about electric cars in Thailand, so perhaps a bit off topic.Personally, I would bin UK Labour's idiotic "Zero" or "Green" bollocks and re-open the North Sea Gas and Oil Fields - masses of jobs, huge investment, LESS IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT!! and hell, less reliance on others during this period of Tariffs and Warfare.

Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Mod edit: We really don't need another thread on EV's so this has been merged with the existing one. There is one on climate change and carbon emissions here where the discussion can continue: viewtopic.php?t=14245

I can now play "My EV is bigger than yours!" because our new mobile workshop is electric:

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
Myself, I'd never go back to owning an ICEV. Performance & savings being the reason.
Quick & short out & about this past week ... 1285 kms
cost Petrol vs Charging Station per km
Petrol ... ฿2.348 per km (14 kpL @ ฿32.88 (91)
Based on MG ZS as owning both versions
Charging Station ... ฿0.518 per km
Petrol cost 4.53 times as much to operate per km, that trip.

This Chinese Sedan Is Faster Than Every Supercar Around the Nürburgring
If you still aren't taking China's EVs seriously, here's further proof that you should. A caged, stripped-out Xiaomi SU7 Ultra prototype lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 6 minutes, 22 seconds—24 seconds quicker than its previous lap set in 2024. That means an electric prototype from China is quicker than any production car—gas-powered or otherwise—around the legendary circuit.
Only three vehicles have ever lapped the Nürburgring quicker: the Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, the Volkswagen ID.R, and the Porsche 956, back in 1983. Xiaomi says it was able to achieve this time "under optimal conditions," which were likely cooler and cloudier than the time set last year.

Re: Electric Vehicles (EV) Thread
All very interesting Steve, but hardly relevant to the mainstream buyers of cars, who simply want a (EV) car that will travel a reasonable distance and charge reasonably fast and no5 break the bank when you buy it (something like a BYD Atto)!!
I’m fairly supportive of EV’s, even though I’ve so far only gone as far as buying PHEV’s. There’s a lot of hype about BYD and others introducing EV’s that will charge in 5 minutes, but at the moment that’s going to be restricted to a very few cars (that will no doubt be relatively expensive) and require very rare fast chargers (that will no doubt be quite expensive to use), so having a car that can be charged very quickly with the right hardware, will be of no use to charge at home with a slow wall charger!!

Having a car that is capable of being fast charged shouldn't stop it being slow charged as well.
As for the really high performance stuff, I suppose it does serve to drive forward technology. If you can make electronic motor controllers capable of handling 1,500 hp, producing a reliable one to handle 200 should be easy.
