^Yes, it was a modified Canadair CL44 which was a license built cargo version of the RR Tyne powered Britannia with a swing tail.
The company I work for started off with CL44s in the 1970s:

Back in the 1980s, I was in the Royal Navy. I recently found some 35mm slides I took on ships while working on aircraft at this time and have just had some of them digitalised.
These were all taken on HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible between 1983 and 1987.

^Yes, when I look back, the UK military still had a bit of clout in those days.

What's the story with this imposter Steve? It is a US Navy Seasprite, never operated by the Royal Navy.

That was on the Hermes during a large NATO exercise out in the Atlantic.
It was quite normal for aircraft to refuel on ships from different navies, the fueling connections, fuels and procedures were standardised throughout NATO.

^Those are pure freighters but if you flew to Thailand on Aeroflot, you might have flown on an IL-96 which is a wide body airliner also made by Ilyushin.

 Actually, I've been thinking about it, and I don't think it was a 96 either. 86 sounds more like it.

The 86 came before the 96, so it was some years ago.
