It is. So if this person paid £618, they almost certainly didn't do so simply with tap and go. They would have to have entered their PIN, at which time the price should presumably have been visible.
The limit for a single contactless card transaction is £100. This is the most you can pay in one go by tapping your card.

For anything over £100, you'll need to use Chip & PIN.

I think it’s actually possible to pay that sort of money if you use Apple Pay on an iPhone, so it could be true. (I know, another reason not to have an iPhone)!!

I think it’s one of the reasons why I normally use cash - no risk of paying £500 instead of £50!!

In Bangkok at the moment where more than 50% of the places we've been to (restaurants, entertainment, shops) do not take cash - it is becoming a minority currency in the capital! Mrs B has had to load up her phone with mobile banking apps as some places are even fussy about which payment method you use and force you to use their affiliated one (7-11 prime culprit for this).

Welcome to the future.

"Hello, I'd like to eat at your establishment tonight but I need to know how I'm going to have to pay first. Oh OK, can't do that, bye bye".

Crazy.

I find the bit about 7-11s more daunting. They are so convenient, and you know exactly what you will get, regardless of what part of Thailand you are in. Worrying news. I've actually advanced beyond my woes at the beginning of this thread, but the likes of my wife never will.

The likes of my wife would have to hand her phone over to a stranger, and trust them with the contents of her bank account. She wouldn't dream of handing her purse over to let people take money out.

I have just spend a weekend in Shenzhen, China. I didn't take any cash with me and paid everything using their WeChat app. I found it quite convenient. Also used the DiDi app for taxis, cheap and convenient, too.

Right, I dunno how they expect tourists (who are not allowed Thai bank accounts or payment apps) to pay unless they're forced to use credit cards.

7-Eleven is owned by CP so the only way you can pay without cash in one is through the True Wallet. Makro is the same, no cards apart from one obscure bank its affiliated with.

This is supposed to be the "convenient" way forward, but as we've discovered, its just more aggro as you need multiple apps and payment platforms as each monopoly tries to force its own products onto consumers while blocking its competitors.

I wonder if this is regional.
I've moved to Nong Khai and Makro certainly take both credit cards and scans as do Lotus, Big C and most others.

You can scan in these places, not in 7-Elevens though unless you use the CP/True app. The point is - tourists will not have Thai banking or payment platforms, so how are they expected to deal with these ever increasing cashless places?!

Just been speaking to my daughter in Hampshire and she said that she's finding a growing number of retailers that ONLY accept cash!!!

The world's gone mad!

When I went to 7 Elevens (Dec-Feb) they wouldn't let me pay by contactless as there is a minimum spend (I can't remember the amount) so I had to pay with cash
