Surprise Road Hazard

Post by Ratsima »

I was cycling on Hwy 3175 in Cha Am yesterday when I encountered a work crew using bush cutters to clear what was mostly grass from the side of the road. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my right eye. I think what happened was that one of the bush cutters flung a rock my way. Fortunately, I was wearing shatterproof cycling glasses, but the force of the rock was enough to push the glasses lens against my eye and cause some minor damage. Without those glasses the injury probably would have been much more severe.

I was using a weed whacker in my backyard and sent a small rock through my double-paned sliding glass door. The velocity can really be impressive. Glad your eye is ok, buddy. It could have been a tragedy for sure.

Glad to hear you survived the ordeal! Did you get the eye checked out?

I did not. The redness has mostly cleared up and there's no vision deficit.

We're headed back to Korat tomorrow. I'll see my ophthalmologist if it seems necessary.

Okay, hope it continues to heal!

Crikey, echo the sentiments above glad you're ok. Highlights the importance of safety gear!

Yeah, you don’t think about it much until it saves your butt.

^Yes, and it reminds me to bring a few more pairs of dark safety glasses out to use on the scooter when I come out next month.

Yes, one must always assess road hazards and prepare. I encountered these grass cutters back in 1993 and it cost me my front windscreen. Insurance will replace, but at your expense. I always use my cycling safety glasses when cutting my own grass, plus high boots as the nylon line type of trimmer tends to send debris flying. I also use them when walking in the neighborhood, the wrap around tint is great in strong sunlight.
Glad you're okay, could have been a lot worse.
