Weather in Hua Hin & Thailand

Surprised there has been no mention of the weather and local flooding in the last 2/3 days.



Ironically, I haven't really been out as I have had a rotten cold, but yesterday, I needed to get to a pharmacy, so made my way up to the night market area, via 102 and was surprised at how much surface water there was and coming back, I cut down the canal 'road' that goes past Lotus, and at the end of that there was almost a lake to drive through. And my other half has been sending lots of film showing various areas of HH subject to flooding.

And then there was the heavy rain, thunder and lightning. Now, I use hearing aids, but not, obviously in bed, so I had the biggest shock ever, when I was woken by what I thought was an explosion, followed by 3-4 other explosions. I thought I had woken up to a nightmare, only to quickly realise that it was a tad damp outside. It was pretty unnerving at first.

I have no idea how much water fell, but this tray is 4" high, and the following morning, it was still full to overflowing.

It's October and that's your big rain month down there.

As we've seen nothing really in the news except the flooding events in the north, but now creeping down to the Bangkok area.

According to ThaiMet

Hua Hin had approx half the rain it should have had in September(77mm versus 157 average)

We remain well down on the year overall although 66mm on Saturday 5th helped!

It's the heaviest rain I've seen in HH this year. Phetchkasem will be underwater, no doubt, but it looks like they got it worse in Prachuap and Thapsakae. For once, Bangsaphan was spared (this time, it's coming).

Cool climes due later
The cool season will set in slightly later than normal in the third week of this month but it will be generally colder than usual, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

The cool weather will begin towards the end of the third week of the month and will last until the end of February, the TMD said yesterday. The start of the season comes a little later than usual, it noted.

The mercury is forecast to drop to the lowest point of between 6-8C in the upper North and upper Northeast.

In Bangkok, the temperature is expected to dip to the lowest point of between 16-18C and the surrounding provinces to between 14-16C.

The coolest temperatures will be experienced from early December to January, according to the TMD. Cool temperatures will also be felt in parts of the South, particularly in the upper section of the region.

Heavy rainfall is predicted over the eastern coast between November and December, with possible flash floods.

Tropical storms may be brewing from next month to December. These could move towards the Gulf of Thailand and the South, bringing heavy downpours and gusty winds to coastal communities.

Thunderstorms, strong winds and possible hail may also occur in the upper North in January and February.

So what they're saying is it might be cooler, it might rain more, there might be tropical storms, and it might flood again ... glad the TMD is on the ball.

I'd describe today as 'wetter', not 'cooler' - the cool stuff usually arrives in late Dec. early Jan. when temperatures drop below 20 overnight in this part of Thailand - it doesn't last long though.

Heavy rain pounded Phetchaburi province on Saturday evening, October 12. Several major roads were flooded, including Ratchadamnoen Road, Damnoen Kasem Road, and Bandai It Road. Many villages experienced power outages, and trees fell across roads. Additionally, lightning struck the emergency call radio antenna (191) at the Phetchaburi Provincial Police Station, causing damage.

It’s probably something to do with the days shortening as we get closer to the winter equinox - I seem to recall it happening every year!!

From the June summer solstice, longest day of the year (June 20, June 21, or June 22) the days start to shorten till the December solstice, shortest day of the year (December 21, December 22, or December 23).

Chiang Mai city began experiencing cold weather in the morning on October 24, with temperatures around 22-23 degrees. At the summit of Doi Inthanon, temperatures dropped to 10 degrees Celsius. The first light viewpoint, a popular morning check-in spot, has seen an increase in tourist numbers. Officials advise tourists to bring warm clothing and raincoats due to the changing weather conditions during this period.

The temperature on Doi Inthanon mountain, Thailand's tallest mountain at 2,565 metres, which is in Chiang Mai province, has dropped below two digits for the first time since the end of the rainy season. It was 9 degrees Celsius early Friday morning, October 25.
