Khao Kheow Zoo

Is it reasonable or possible to visit the zoo in one day from Hua Hin? Or is better to stay at a hotel, close to the zoo, overnight?
I have heard that the line is really long to see Moo Deng, on the weekends, so its probably better to visit midweek.

I've been to Chonburi as a day trip for the football, but it is a very long day. An overnight stay would certainly be easier.
