Amazed quite frankly considering you've spent a great deal of time in southeast Asia (and more?). Very well known in "tropical waters", and I've been lucky enough to see them in both Australia and Vietnam.
They are however also seen in cooler waters and believe it or not, I've also seen them off the coast of Wales!!
It is quite an incredible sight.... "The Northern Lights of The Sea"!!
[EDIT] And no DM, this wasn't a vision after a few shots of Welsh Single Malt!

Knew of luminous thingys in the ocean before just not seen things that react to movement quite like this. Especially in the sand in that first clip.

I've seen them often in Khao Tao beach during my Hua Hin days.

Bioluminescence in other words - we had them on our beach a couple of weeks ago. April is usually the season for them here, great fun to scuba dive in!

Only experienced them at one location, Ao Kwai, Ko Phayam. Pretty cool.

You can see them on California beaches at certain times of the year, especially around Ventura.

Just did a quick Wikipedia and it says on there that these things will hunt and take down rabbits.
