If you look at all the illnesses that were said to lead to people's deaths, you'll see that they are all the result of the typical Thai diet. In other words, they were all preventable. But hey, don't touch my food.

If their diets consist of lots of sugar and salt, in nearly everything then, yes, their diets are crap. I wasn't looking "at numbers only," I was looking at deaths reported from preventable diseases that were exacerbated by Covid-19.

Because the numbers dying in Thailand are still relatively small, they can go into a lot more detail regarding underlying causes - in the US and Europe there are too many dying to say other than “there were other underlying causes”

Yep, 2,070 according to the Thai news channel on at the moment. That'll be the Songkran fallout - from the week off and travelling that this ever so smart government encouraged.

The Prayut/Prawit government has failed and now we’re stuck with them
Thailand broke the 2,000 new cases plateau for the first time on Friday. The unwanted record means that the third wave of the pandemic is now the more severe with hospitals filled to capacity throughout the country.

The government’s gamble has failed and now the public health and the country’s economic recovery is in jeopardy.

The Prayut Chan-ocha administration wagered that it could weather the third wave and not shut down the country so that our economic recovery from last year’s recession could stay intact.

It wagered that it did not have to shut down the country prior to Songkran to increase the spending and traveling that Thais would take during the long holiday while knowing full well that the pandemic would likely spread because of their decision.

To make matters worse, the administration’s mismanagement prior to the third wave of the pandemic are coming to a head.

The government’s vaccination program, or lack thereof, has meant that the country is not nearly inoculated enough to stem the tide of the latest outbreak. Not only have we not been inoculated sufficiently when compared to countries within our region, we will not likely get the vaccines that we need anytime soon.

The government’s decision to only bring in Sinovacs and AstraZeneca vaccines while hoping that the locally-produced AZ doses would somehow materialize quickly has proven to be a resounding failure.

For reasons known only to the government, the Prayut administration bet all our lives and livelihood on vaccines produced by a failing company, Siam Bioscience, that had no prior experience in producing vaccines.

Covid cases top 2,000 a day, 4 deaths

The government on Friday reported four new deaths related to Covid-19 and a new daily high of 2,070 infections confirmed over the previous 24 hours.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said the nationwide death toll has risen to 121.

The 118th death was a Thai man, 72, in Bangkok. He visited Phuket from April 9 to 12. On April 13, he had a fever, cough, sore throat and diarrhea.

On April 17 he was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with lung inflammation. He tested positive the following day and needed a ventilator. He died at 6.29pm on Tuesday.

The 119th death was a Thai man, 74, with hypertension and cardiac arrhythmia, in Songkhla province.

He was in contact with a since confirmed case on April 6, tested positive on April 10 and was admitted to hospital on April 11.

On April 15, an X-ray found severe lung inflammation. His heart stopped early on Thursday and he was pronounced dead at 5.15am.

The 120th death was a Thai woman, 29, who was obese, in Samut Prakan province.

She was in contact with a since confirmed case on April 10 and developed a cough and shortness of breath, with excessive phlegm, on April 12.

She tested positive on April 16 and was admitted to hospital on April 18.

Later she had lung inflammation and an infection, and suffered heart failure, and was pronounced dead at 6.45am on Thursday.

The 121st death was a Thai man, 83, in Samut Prakan, with diabetes, hypertension, chronic renal disease and heart disease.

The man was in contact with a previously confirmed case. He had a cough with excessive phlegm on April 8 and tested positive and was admitted to a hospital the following day.

On April 10 he had severe lung inflammation and needed a ventilator. He died at 12.28am on Thursday.

The latest fatalitiesraised the death toll in the third wave of Covid-19 this month to 27.

The 2,070 new cases over the past 24 hours comprised 2,062 local infections and eight imported cases. Of the local cases, 1,902 were confirmed at hospitals and 160 identified through mass testing.

Bangkok logged 740 new cases (up from 446 on Wednesday), Chiang Mai 237 (up from 99), Chon Buri 125 (up from 97) and Samut Prakan 79 (up from 39).

The eight imported cases were quarantined arrivals from India (5), Turkey, Pakistan and Malaysia.

Total cases were now 50,183, of which 30,189 (60%) had recovered, including 341 discharged on Thursday, and 19,873 were in hospital. To date this month, there were 21,320 confirmed infections.

Globally, Covid-19 cases rose by 884,273 in 24 hours to 145.32 million. The worldwide death toll went up by 13,388 to 3.08 million.

The United States had the most cases at 32.67 million, up 67,070, at the most deaths at 584,226, up 896.

India was second with 16.26 million cases, up 332,503, and the death toll there rose by 2,256 to 186,928.
