Thailand: https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/ge ... d-flare-up

(Last line of article)

...."So far, 323,989 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered to 274,354 people nationwide, with some already having been given two shots."

It doesn't seem that they're publishing charts or clear updates concerning vaccination progress, and where and to whom. Not surprising.

Reading the below article it appears that there is still a block on private organizations importing and administering vaccine themselves. Perhaps a threat to organizations who "say" they will be producing a vaccine here. Most certainly there can be no interference with that money making opportunity. :banghead:

Action on inoculation paramount

https://www.bangkokpost.com/business/20 ... -paramount

Tourism operators have slammed the government's inefficient public inoculation scheme, which is preventing herd immunity as a fresh outbreak affects the industry for a third time.

Thailand's tourism industry was hurt by a second outbreak of the pandemic late last year and was just starting to glimpse a potential recovery this month with the long Songkran holiday beginning next week.

"We cannot stop operations every time a new cluster causes the government to impose strict restrictions. The most urgent need right now is a pro-active strategy for the country's public inoculation," said Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, president of the Thai Hotels Association.

The government must accelerate the sluggish pace of vaccinations and quickly facilitate firms procuring various types and doses of vaccines to create herd immunity, said Mrs Marisa.

The government has to balance economic and public health concerns, such as allowing interprovincial travel to help the economy move forward, she said.

Hoteliers have already received cancellations for both room and restaurant bookings, but most guests who have already booked for Songkran are still awaiting further updates from the government.

The average hotel occupancy nationwide during Songkran is expected to be around 30%, but the occupancy rate might drop after the report on new infections.

Thanapol Cheewarattanaporn, president of the Association of Domestic Travel, said the recent wave of infections will be more destructive to the tourism industry than the second wave detected in Samut Sakhon because the virus rapidly spread in Bangkok, which is the centre of the country's economic and business activity.

The government should have searched more actively in nearby provinces around Samut Sakhon, as well as Bangkok, when the second wave started in December last year to ensure the virus was under control, he said. Such action would prevent a spike in later cases, such as a third wave, said Mr Thanapol.

Even though tour operators cannot predict the impact of a third wave, domestic tourism is likely to suffer and take longer to recover, he said.

Thai AirAsia said there has not been a significant number of cancellations following the new surge of infections.

However, passengers have shown concern over a 14-day quarantine requirement in Buri Ram province, which had already announced travel restrictions on people from red zones. Airlines are requested to provide them with latest official information.

The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) also called on the government to speed up administering vaccines to the Thai population.

"Authorities are slow in vaccinating people," said JSCCIB chairman Supant Mongkolsuthree. "They should relax some regulations to facilitate companies that want to import vaccines and give them to employees."

UNCERTAIN OUTLOOK

JSCCIB is preparing to reduce its GDP growth forecast on April 21, following the fresh outbreak of Covid-19 infections recorded earlier this week.

The group is worried the disease transmissions, resulting mainly from a cluster of pubs in Bangkok's Thong Lor area, will plunge the country into a third wave of the pandemic.

He expects the new outbreak will hinder economic recovery as it comes after the government announced a plan to allow vaccinated foreign tourists to visit Phuket without quarantine from July 1.

"The JSCCIB is seriously concerned about whether the government can control the spread of infections," said Mr Supant, who is also chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries.

Earlier this year, JSCCIB predicted GDP would grow by 1.5-3.5% in 2021, with exports rising by 3-5%. It projected the inflation rate at 0.8-1%.

The prediction was based on state economic stimulus measures and a hope for global economic recovery, following the distribution of vaccines in many countries.

If the ongoing outbreak causes the government to impose lockdown measures again during Songkran, it will cause an economic impact valued at 5 billion baht, said Sanan Angubolkul, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

He recently talked with Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang about the situation and both agreed to carefully plan appropriate responses to the outbreak.

Public health is the first priority, but any steps against Covid-19 must be carried out with consideration of the impact on the economy. City Hall and the chamber agree only certain businesses will be temporarily shut down, with some areas under strict control, said Mr Sanan.

Progress!

Covid-19 vaccines from private sector importers allowed

https://thethaiger.com/coronavirus/covi ... rs-allowed

Thailand’s private sector will be allowed to purchase and import Covid-19 vaccines in Thailand, according to a government deputy spokesperson today. She declared that the government will not monopolise the vaccination market and that private enterprises can import Covid-19 vaccines for sale. A lot of confusion exists in the public regarding the situation with vaccines and the spokesperson stated that they wanted to attempt to clarify inaccurate information. The production capacity for vaccines in Thailand is far lower than the demand for people awaiting their Coronavirus vaccination.

“According to the Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Ministry, as of April 5, countries had placed orders for up to 9.6 billion doses, and only 658 million doses have been administered so far.”

There are many different Covid-19 vaccines on the market, some of which have blanket approval and others that have been approved specifically for emergency use. More are being tested or undergoing the review and approval process by the Food and Drug Administration currently. Many manufacturers already have contracts for direct government sales, but the government is willing to allow private enterprises to make purchases on their own. This may lead to faster importation and distribution of vaccines.

Currently, the Thai government is importing Covid-19 vaccines from Sinovac and AstraZeneca, while they’re eyeing the Johnson & Johnson vaccine next. The Food and Drug Administration is currently reviewing the American Moderna vaccine as well as China’s second vaccine, Sinopharm, and the Russian Sputnik V. Another vaccine, Bharat Biotech from India, has also just submitted its application. The Thai FDA is ready and willing to allow licensing for private companies to import vaccines as well, the spokesperson confirmed.

The vaccination roll-out underway in Thailand has been slow with a focus on key tourism sectors like Phuket where 100,000 vaccines have been received so far with hundreds of thousands more to come in the following months. There’s no information currently on what companies might import which Covid-19 vaccines and how they will be sold and administered.

Any private organization buying vaccine is going to be well down the queue. And will they be able to match prices countries are willing to pay? Vaccines for the rich.

Just watched a report on Thai news discussing global vaccination levels, Israel is leading the way and the newscasters even mocked Thailand for not even reaching 1% yet. If the figures above are correct, its just 0.4% (including generals and politicians).

As mentioned above, the private sector will be seeing the dollar signs in this if they can buy and sell jabs themselves. Money always number one in Thailand!

Although not a 'country' but a British territory, Gibraltar completed full vaccination (2 doses) last month. The whole population having been vaccinated, the 'Wear a Mask' notices have been taken down.

I know. But it's still a result. They're now vaccinating Spaniards who can't get it in their own country.

Get ready to blow up when you read this! :cuss: The poor official who divulged this information is surely going to disappear. Poor sod. :( What will Thailand do now?

Chinese Officials Say Chinese Vaccines’ Effectiveness Low

https://www.khaosodenglish.com/news/int ... eness-low/

BEIJING (AP) — In a rare admission of the weakness of Chinese coronavirus vaccines, the country’s top disease control official says their effectiveness is low and the government is considering mixing them to give them a boost.

Chinese vaccines “don’t have very high protection rates,” said the director of the China Centers for Disease Control, Gao Fu, at a conference Saturday in the southwestern city of Chengdu.

Beijing has distributed hundreds of millions of doses in other countries while also trying to promote doubt about the effectiveness of Western vaccines.

“It’s now under formal consideration whether we should use different vaccines from different technical lines for the immunization process,” Gao said.

The effectiveness rate of a coronavirus vaccine from Sinovac, a Chinese developer, at preventing symptomatic infections has been found to be as low as 50.4% by researchers in Brazil. By comparison, the vaccine made by Pfizer has been found to be 97% effective.

Beijing has yet to approve any foreign vaccines for use in China, where the coronavirus emerged in late 2019.

Gao gave no details of possible changes in strategy but mentioned mRNA, a previously experimental technique used by Western vaccine developers while China’s drug makers used traditional technology.

“Everyone should consider the benefits mRNA vaccines can bring for humanity,” Gao said. “We must follow it carefully and not ignore it just because we already have several types of vaccines already.”

Gao previously raised questions about the safety of mRNA vaccines. He was quoted by the official Xinhua News Agency as saying in December he couldn’t rule out negative side effects because they were being used for the first time on healthy people.

Chinese state media and popular health and science blogs also have questioned the safety and effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine, which uses mRNA.

As of April 2, some 34 million people have received both of the two doses required by Chinese vaccines and about 65 million received one, according to Gao.

Experts say mixing vaccines, or sequential immunization, might boost effectiveness rates. Trials around the world are looking at mixing of vaccines or giving a booster shot after a longer time period. Researchers in Britain are studying a possible combination of Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines.

I read that the Thai govt. is allowing private hospitals to import vaccines. Shrewd move. Now the govt. doesn't have to spend money on vaccines and if the hospitals make a profit on them and have to pay taxes on the sales, the govt. will be making money from the pandemic. Clever folks in the govt.

Firstly, private hospitals will have to compete with the world market. I'm not sure they'd be very successful with that. Currently there isn't an excess of vaccines. If they do manage, then I guess the price to the public will be high and would there be a guarantee that the hospital would have enough to give the second dose when needed.

^^ Maybe they should go for single shot J&J. Though I think I've seen some reports of clots with it.

According to reports, although J & J have reported side effects, the incidence is less than the other main vaccines.
However, “in the clinical trials [for the J&J vaccine], fewer people reported side effects, relative to Pfizer or Moderna, especially if we compare J&J to the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna,” Jetelina said.

Over 80 percent of people who received the Moderna-NIAID vaccineTrusted Source experienced local reactions after either dose. It was about the same for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccineTrusted Source. This is higher than seen with the J&J vaccine.
