I was up there in December and it just seems to depend on how they see you: I was in a newish truck with my partner and got hit with the farang price. My friend was following in a ten year old truck with his wife and two half Thai and one full Thai kid and he got in for the Thai price without showing anything, he speaks fluent Thai which I think helps as well.
I told my friend that I was going to have to look at the waterfall for ten times as long to get my moneys worth.

Much as I love Pala U and the drive up there, especially in the rainy season, the dual pricing has been taken to extreme. I know it's a Thai resource and I'm foreign, but B400 versus B40 is taking the weewee.

400 WOW!!!

Post by H2ODunc »

It alswys makes laugh when I read postings about people whining about getting ripped off for a couple of hundred baht to get to the airport or it costing 400 baht to get into a nature park. Have you people forgotten just how much things at home cost. At home a taxi from London to Heathrow is the thick end of 80 pounds on a good day. Go for a day in the lake district and you'd pay several times what youre whining about just to park your sodding car!Add to that the cost of eating and drinking and then tell me its still too expensive here. I've notiuced alot of'people who have settled here suddenly start to get VERY VERY cheap. Always complaining about the price of things. Think of how much things cost back home then realise how lucky you are to be here. The pricing has been open knowledge for a long time, you live here and you didnt know??
I never forget a face but in your case I'll make an exception!

H20dunc, actually my Thai partner complains about these things a lot more than I do, to her 400 baht to look at a waterfall is outrageous, that’s more than two days salary in rural Issan. I tend not to care so much as you don’t exactly go to see a waterfall every day; I’ve been there twice in four years.
Incidentally, I almost had to get a taxi to the airport in London yesterday and after reading your post I’m glad I persevered with the creaky bank holiday Tube service.

Dunc, no need to get all sanctimonious. The point is the magnitude of the differential, not the absolute price. I wasnt complaining about the price - I spend most of the year in England and £12 for me and the wife to see Pala U isnt too bad by English standards. It is though ten times the rate locals are asked to pay. Everyone knows the sliding pricing scale for everything, the point is that Pala U's differential is having a laugh. As are you by your own admission.

Agree Steve.
To pay 400 Bt in order to look at a small stream is just silly.
Go to Switzerland, Germany, Norway or Canada-USA where you really can hear the roar of a waterfall. For free.
Pala U is not very impressive and should be for free.
I intend to live forever - so far so good.

Here's a letter from the Bangkok Post "Post bag" on Tuesday.

"Wrong assumption

This morning's radio business news cites a report from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) expecting a drop in tourism by 7.3 percent.

The reason given is Thailand's political situation. That's news to me, as well as many other Westerners here. I think TAT has it a bit upside down as always.

Many friends across the world cite the new airport's distance from the city, its inconveniences and hassles, long waits, poor service, etc. as one of the reasons they do not want to come.

Another reason cited by TAT is the expected tightening of alcohol sales within 500 metres of schools and temples. Most people understand these rules as they are in place in most countries, distances from these institutions, of course, varying.

TAT itself, with its over-exaggeration of many mediocre tourist sites, double-pricing, and an increase in airline fares are also part of the reasons. TAT should do its homework before mouthing off and blaming Thailand's political situation.

Lets hope that the TAT take notice of falling figures and try to be a little less greedy in future.

I've been to Pala-u and got in at the local price no problem simply by showing a Thai drivers license. I also recently got into attractions on Phuket at local prices as I could read the Thai price (there were two rates quoted).

There is no excuse for this kind of racism, the price should be the same, why should I pay ten times the local rate if I live and pay my taxes in Thailand?

I also wish people would stop comparing it to "back home" for many of us this is home.

Ahhh ... good to be back ranting!

Don't worry guys, its not only Thailand. I work in Bath, England. The same 2 tier pricing works here for their attractions. If you're a resident of Bath, simply produce a utility bill showing your Bath post code, and you qualify for the reduced rate.

Unfortunately, I have a Bristol post code, so I simply stay away from Bath's many attractions - my choice.

I was in Nottingham visiting my parents at the weekend and got to see the inside of the oldest pub in England for the price of a pint of bitter, which I thought commendable value. (Ye olde trip to Jerusalem, 1189AD, allegedly!)
I believe they try to charge everybody the same, but I wouldn’t be surprised if people from Derby occasionally pay more.
