Smog masks most of greater Bangkok

Fine dust pollution exceeded the safe threshold in 45 of the 48 areas of greater Bangkok on Thursday, with the worst in Bangkok's Bung Kum district, the Pollution Control Department reported.

The levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter were measured at 47-81 microgrammes per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours. The safe threshold is set at 50mcg.

It reached 81mcg in Bung Kum.

Other unsafe areas included Bang Khunthian, Bang Na, Din Daeng, Pathumwan, Thon Buri, Wang Thonglang and Yannawa districts of Bangkok.

Toxic levels of PM2.5 were also reported in Bang Kruai and Pakkret districts of Nonthaburi; Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani; Bang Sao Thong and Phra Pradaeng districts of Samut Prakan; and Muang district of Samut Sakhon, the department reported.

Unsafe levels of smog were measured in 43 out of 50 areas in greater Bangkok on Friday morning, with the worst pollution in Samut Sakhon province, the Pollution Control Department reported.

Over the 24 hours to 9am, the levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter ranged from 52 to 113 microgrammes per cubic metre of air. The safe threshold is set at 50mcg by the government.

The worst pol;lution was recorded in tambon Mahachai of Muang district in Samut Sakhon province.

Other highly unsafe areas were in Bang Kapi, Bang Khunthian, Bang Na, Din Daeng, Pathumwan, Phaya Thai, Thon Buri, Wang Thong Lang and Yannawa districts of Bangkok.

Similar levels were recorded in Muang district of Nakhon Pathom; Bang Kruai and Pakkret districts of Nonthaburi; Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thani; Bang Sao Thong, Muang and Phra Pradaeng districts of Samut Prakan; and Krathum Baen district of Samut Sakhon.

PM2.5 levels in greater Bangkok on the previous day ranged from 47 to 81mcg.

GREATER BANGKOK COUGHS, SQUINTS AS PM2.5 REACHES HAZARDOUS LEVELS

BANGKOK — PM2.5 levels are skyrocketing in Bangkok for the third consecutive day Friday according to multiple air monitors, shrouding the capital with multiple potential health hazards.

Residents in Bangkok, Samut Prakan, and Pathum Thani are breathing in air levels ranging from unhealthy to hazardous Friday, according to both independent and government air monitoring services.

AirVisual recorded air quality at 156 AQI while the World Air Quality Index Project Team recorded an average of 163 AQI, both unhealthy levels, while some areas reached as high as 221 AQI (“very unhealthy”).

The City Hall’s air quality unit measured lower PM 2.5 levels than these two, ranging from 53 to 115 AQI. However, the government did declare that nearly all of the Bangkok districts have unhealthy air levels. The affected districts are Bang Khun Thian, Phra Nakhon, Phasi Charoen, Bangkok Noi, Khlong San, Bang Kho Laem, and Yan Nawa districts.

The only three districts with average PM 2.5 levels are Don Mueang, Khan Na Yao, and Minburi.

AirVisual recommended that people avoid outdoor exercise, close windows, wear masks outdoors, and use an air purifier. World Air Quality forecast that air quality would get even worse over the weekend.

In a Friday tweet, Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha said that cars with black smoke would be put on a watchlist, and they would be subject to tougher inspection when they renew their license.

Saturday through Thursday, government health officials will also send out mobile health clinics in the Phasi Charoen in western Bangkok, one of the Bangkok districts with the worst air quality, according to government stats.

Thailand’s PM 2.5 crisis, which appears to be escalating in recent years, seems to have no end in sight. Government solutions typically involve spraying water into the air at affected areas and pledging tougher punishment for vehicles or buildings that contribute to pollution.

As usual, residents frustrated with the smog are airing their anger through the only venue of recourse they could find: popular hashtags like #PM25, #PM25Dust, and #BangkokDust.

There seems to be some weather coming in from the south that appears would clean out a lot of the bad air. Perhaps even some rain as well in the Hua Hin, Bangkok and Eastern areas. We can only hope.

What utter BS! He needs to get out of his escorted motorcade and try driving around behind some of the idiots spewing clouds of black smoke, INCLUDING Bangkok buses!
Any vehicle spewing visible exhaust needs to be put off the road. Wheel clamped until a tow truck arrives, and the owner fined at least 10,000 Baht.
