Do I read that correctly that it is 5 hours and goes via Kanchanaburi, I thought there was a direct train????

Times vary between 3.5 and just over 4 hours from BKK to HH. The train does not go through Kanchanaburi. You have to change at Nakhon Phatom. The Kanchanaburi train goes from Thonburi twice per day and take five hours to get to the end of the line.

It is an easy mistake to make if you are not familiar with old fashioned timetables.
