I know you don't want to use MS Word (there are other ways of getting it, you know ) but it has a very useful 'compare' feature that allows you to assess changes made to documents where the track changes (aka markup) hasn't been turned on.
Have you considered Google docs? I haven't used it but understand it's another option and, I think, free.

Not sure if this is a "surgery" item, or should be in buying a new laptop?
Having at last been able to buy a new unit, how o how do you transfer ALL the old files from the original laptop?
The ignorant twits at the shop where I bought it were no help at all! The old unit is till working, albeit painfully slow.
I also have a backup on a portable hard drive, the only problem with it is that the program software is in French, which I have a problem following.
All suggestions welcome!

My brain is like an Internet browser; 12 tabs are open and 5 of them are not responding, there's a GIF playing in an endless loop,... and where is that annoying music coming from?
Not sure why you'd want to transfer ALL the files - XP system stuff isnt compatible with Windows 10 and all programs/software will need to be reinstalled anyway.
The easiest way to transfer YOUR files (docs, music, pics, video etc) is via a usb portable hard drive or big thumb drive.

The drop down window on the right in the link, for Windows 10, says 10 is not covered, but it does point you to http://pcmoverfree.azurewebsites.net/
Looking at that it doesn't specifically say if good from XP, but take a look. It's free for personal use it seems. Pete
Thanks Pete, that looks like it may work. I guess it is just a sales item, but I wonder if either the Ethernet, or USB cables are standard items? I do not have Wifi, or any network, but both computers have USB and Ethernet sockets.
I think the reference to Win 10 on the first link you posted just means you cannot transfer FROM Win 10?

Yes, just the way I wrote it I guess. I just need all the word documents, pictures, etc., not any program software.

Yes, probably right in ref to the Win 10, but that new link makes that irrelevant I think. From new link, you can go from lower to Win 10. I don't see why USB would not work. There's something on the link about downloading the "user manual" I'm sure details will be in there. Pete

^ I looked at the user manual quickly. Yes, you can transfer from XP, and yes you can use USB or Ethernet instead of wi-fi. Good details in the manual how to do it, first by downloading the software to each computer. Pete

Yes, thanks Pete. I did look at the manual on line also. The other problem at the moment is the start button on Win 10 does not work, and evidently that is the access to change the home page. I also tried to download new drivers for the printer, which, despite setting the area to Australia, the down load gets started and then comes up with a page in Thai that I cannot read!
The idiots where I bought the thing were supposed to both set it up in English, AND transfer the files. The computer is working good, but I am limited with my efforts with the settings, especially when about half of it is in Thai.

I suspect it was caused by my "military precision addiction" which made me continue formatting even when the pc told me the formatting was concluded!
Of course, I kept this secret to myself! Lol
Now one year later one Saturday morning before Christmas Windows would not open.
Our resident computer wizard JAM fortunately managed to recover my files and my internet favourites.
I decided that it was high time to store my pc data in a safe place, and I had read an internet ad by
'JustCloud'.
Well, I tried to open an account and was told there was already an account with that email address.
I asked to reset my password, and did so.
Strangely when I had finished registration and paid my annual fee, I discovered that I had opened an
account with 'MYPCBACKUP', NOT 'JUSTCLOUD'!
I subsequently cancelled my account, and tried to register with "JustCloud'. However I ended up with "MyPcbackup' again!
Seems to be somewhat fishy, doesn't it?
I may try a different 'Cloud' provider and/or a different email address.
