260 dead in five days with Chiang Mai topping the list with 14 deaths
A total of 260 people were killed and 2,542 others injured in 2,446 road accidents throughout the country during the New Year’s festival from December 30 to January 3, according to Pol Lt-Gen Suveera Songmetta, the assistant national police chief

On January 3 alone which was the fifth day of the road safety campaign, there were 342 road accidents resulting to 33 dead and 379 injured.

Chiang Mai ranks the top of accident-prone provinces with the most accidents and fatalities recorded during the five-day period – 109 accidents, 14 deaths and 106 injured.

Five provinces are accident free. They are Phatthalung, Narathiwat, Sing Buri, Trang and Nakhon Phanom.

Pol Lt-Gen Suveera warned motorists to strictly follow traffic regulations as they were returning home today. He listed three accident-prone points in the southern Isan routes namely Chong Tago in Buriram, Kong Muang bend on Friendship highway in Nakhon Ratchasima and Pakthongchai-KabinBuri.

I just talked with a friend that was coming back to HH from up north. They decided to end the journey back after being on the road for nine hours and traveling the distance that normally only took three hours.

Total death toll in six days of the "seven dangerous days" now stands at 302 killed and 2,843 people injured in 2,733 accidents.

The Road Safety Centre spokesman M.L. Panadda Diskul, also Prime Minister’s Office Minister, said a total of 302 people were killed and 2,843 injured in 2,733 accidents in the past six days of the seven dangerous days, starting December 30.

Only on Sunday January 4, there were 287 accidents nationwide with 42 deaths and 301 injuries, he said.

Drunk driving remained the cause of most accidents (27.53%), followed by speeding (26.83%)

Chiang Mai is the province with the highest number of 122 accident cases, 15 deaths, and 119 injuries.

The provinces with no reports of deaths are Trang, Narathiwat, Sing Buri and Nakhon Phanom.

I’m not making light of the horrendous figures but we all know that Thailand has some of the most dangerous roads and drivers in the world.

If published figures are to be believed there are 26-27,000 road deaths each year in the Kingdom….Unbelievably High!

Statistically of those killed, up to 70 or 80 per cent are motorcyclists or their passengers

In 2012, the latest figures that I have to hand, only about 28 per cent of teenage motorcyclists and about 49 per cent of adults wore helmets and instead relied on good fortune and amulets.

If we use the lower figure of 26,000 road deaths and simply divide by 52 we get a road death rate of, near as damn it, 500 people per week.

Therefore the figures over the 7 days are probably going to be less that the average for any week in the year.

Are my figures wrong or am I missing a crucial fact

Road fatalities during the New Year’s holiday fell 7% from a year ago, with 341 killed in the “seven dangerous days,” Interior permanent secretary Wiboon Sanguanpong said.

From Dec 30-Jan 5, 3,117 were injured in 2,997 accidents. According to Mr Wiboon, the number of people wounded fell 6.7 %, while the number of accidents fell by 5.5%.

On Jan 5, the last of the seven-day road-safety campaign, 265 accidents claimed 40 lives and injured 274..................................................>

Every year I or someone asks the question if these New Year and Songkran period stats are different from any other calendar period of the same duration? I don't think we've ever answered it conclusively. I personally don't think they are much different. If they were, the Gov would be quoting averages between holiday and non-holiday periods to prove their point about DUI or whatever, and they don't. Pete

Yeah I completely agree with you. Things here in Thailand aren’t same as in other parts of world. I was in US and worked with a Los Angeles DUI attorney and there your whole life changes if you are caught driving drunk and rules are much stricter.
