Given the extent to which I rely on the Internet and how often I use it, I never cease to be amazed how little I know...
Got it, thanks!

Trouble updating Windows 8.1

Post by Khundon1975 »

Has anyone had trouble downloading/installing the Windows update KB2975719?

I am running latest 8.1 64 bit system and have Win updates set to Auto.
Updates tell me that there is a new update but after several attempts to download it, the systems stops halfway through, with the following error code “80242000” or “-DT000 (1)”

I have tried to download the update manually with Win stand alone updater but that does not work either!

Looked on google and there seems to all sorts of suggested fixes all seem to contradict each other and Windows site is no real help.

Anyone had this problem and have you managed to fix the issue?

I posted before about my toshiba. I assumed it was dying a death but tried to speed it up. What I didn't prepare for (very stupidly) was the thing shutting down on me completely.

The thing will no longer get into windows. It just says...

A disk read error occurred

Before this it just said something along the lines of, unable to boot.

I have a lot of work on that specific machine that naively, I didn't back up. Is there anything I can do with it on my end before I take it into a shop? I know many places can extract data from machines... Just wondered if there's anything I can try beforehand. The thing is now a paperweight.

Richard :thumb:

I deleted all failed attempts to install KB2975719 together with the 5 associated files and anything that seemed to have any thing to do with the damn update yesterday and then set update to auto and hey presto, the damn thing downloaded and installed!!!!

I have been promised an Apple computer for Christmas, can't bloody wait.

MODS - please move if not appropriate thread.

I use a VPN and recently got this message regarding downloading using Pirate Bay. Anybody else received any similar message?

Hello Richard,

Please note we have received a DMCA notification regarding the IP your VPN account uses. File sharing of copyright material is a violation of our Policies and USA Federal law.

We understand that computers can be infected with a virus and cause these kinds of complaints to be generated.

Please check your system for any software that could be causing this problem. We would have to disable your account if the activity continues.

No action will be taken at this time, but if the DMCA complaints continue it will be with great regret on our part to deactivate your account.

If you would like more information on the complaints received, you can view the complaint in the customer area.

Best Regards,
StrongVPN / Reliablehosting Abuse Team

Looks like your Pirate bay activities have been tracked and StrongVPN have been sent a DMCA notice as a warning to you.

I understand that there are millions being sent out by companies to protect their copyright.

Could be wrong though Richard.

How, if you are using a VPN, did they track you?

I'm no expert, but presumably even going through a VPN must leave a record of an IP address - it just isn't the one on your home PC. The notice was sent to StrongVPN and they have simply forwarded it to Richard.

I think many, if not all, VPN services have policies forbidding torrent downloads of pirated movies and other copyright material. It's not difficult for them to find you. I used Witopia for a while and an article on their site explained how it works.

What is the point of using these sites? I don't think anyone has commented on that aspect on here. Are we so poor we can't afford a subscription to a service that gives us the video that satisfies us? Or, is it just the thrill of getting away with something? Pete

For downloading torrents, you're best off NOT being connected to the VPN. I'm pretty sure your Thai ISP aren't going to give you a hard time.

VPNs are useful for watching content not otherwise viewable in Thailand - iPlayer, 4onDemand etc.

I'm no expert either DM and never download any films/music etc so have no need of VPN or TOR.

I suspect that you and hhinner are correct and the VPN company have passed the notice on and that helps them to cover their own ass.

Well I have to admit I was downloading some 'cam' movies at the time and my virus software kept rejecting access to certain sites. The 'cam' movies (John Wick and Fury')were crap so deleted.
