29 Year Old Fortuner ??

Post by sand_dancer »

Whilst eating yesterday...... I was perusing a local publication......

Contained within...... Was an ad for the sale of a 1985 Fortuner........

Asking price....... 260,000 baht

I know the price of 2nd hand vehicles in Thailand is beyond belief......

But was there a misprint somewhere...... Or was someone really looking for 260,000 baht for a 29 year old car ......?

I think there must be a mistake, Fortuners have only been made since the present version of the Hilux came out in about 2005. The older version was called the Sportrider if I remember correctly.

That's right, Steve the Sports Rider came out in 1998 and was very popular, then came the Fortuner in 2005

When the Airport was taken over by the yellow shirts, a colleague and I had to go to an important meeting in Doha.
With no flight available from Bangkok, I had to fly out of Changi in Singapore.
So - by road to Phuket, Silk Air to Singapore - then Qatar Airways to Doha. No problem.

Our Office Manager in BKK lent me his new top of the range Fortuner with driver(s) to get me and my buddy down to Phuket

It was quite possibly the worst 9 or so hours I've ever spent in the back seat of a vehicle. My ar5e was almost red raw.

I also experienced them in Hanoi - same problem.

OK - you get seven seats and they're cheap. That's all you can say about them.

But let's be clear -
The Toyota Hi Lux Vigo = Fortuner
The Isuzu MU7 - Now MUX = D Max
The Chevrolet Outlander = Colorado
Mitsubishi Triton = Pajero Sport (BTW the name is an insult to the great Pajero)

I honestly think that the motor manufacturers are conning people by adding a chunk of metal on the back with extra seats inside.

I guess you can say that I don't like them................. :naughty:

Now Mrs.T wants a(n occasional) seven seater - which we can use as a courtesy vehicle at the Lodge. Needless to say, NONE of the above are on the shopping list.

The Honda Odyssey would be nice - but at THB 2.6m+ it's out of my range for sure.

So it's looking like the Chevrolet 2.4 Captiva that runs on E85 and is underpinned by a car platform - much better ride.

In 2007 a friend of mine bought one as a surprise birthday present for his wife, even though I had warned him that they drive and feel like a pick up. He kept it hidden at my place until the birthday party and his wife was well pleased on the day, but after a couple of weeks she told him " I want my car back, this thing drives and feels like a pick-up", so he sold it and got her a Honda CRV.

Is it not that pick up based cars are taxed at a much lower rate thats why they are so cheap in comparison with car based SUVs.

As a certified Scottish tight@rse....... There is no way that I would consider buying a 2nd hand vehicle in Thailand.....

Unless...... Terry knows of one going for 160 Baht :D :D

Do it the Thai way...

Bring a vehicle over from abroad (import) and register it saying that it was brought over in parts and 'built' here so no need to pay the ridiculous tax on it (200%).

You see lads... there are many benefits of speaking the Thai lingo. If you don't speak it after many years here... well, that's just not right really (unless you are deaf and dumb of course which, if you are, you have my sympathy). It's not just luxury cars that go down this route.

:neener: :duck: :D

Joking aside, car prices are ridiculous here. I prefer to have a chauffer when I feel the need to be in a car (long distance/many people). No massive upfront money and a new car every year...

It is with Fortuner as it is with all the other converted pickups to SUV in Thailand. You get what you pay for! If you want a cheap 7 seater you can get that. If you want a real SUV with 7 seats you can go for the imported brands and equally pay top baht.

Put the money on the table and you can by whatever you want!

Personally I have a Fortuner and are quite pleased to be able to have a large car with 7 seats for that price , though I've been planning to maybe change it out with a MB M-series. But to do that I will need to pay approx. 3-6 million (used-new) compared to the 1.5 mill baht for a new Fortuner.

I have to disagree. I've driven the Triton ---- load of cr**p. However, the Pajero is a different animal. Petrol engine as opposed to diesel and with cruise control, climate control, electric seats, automatic windscreen wipers plus many more comfort accessories etc etc etc. You can't honestly compare it to a pick-up!
