Post by Lancashire Lass »

Hi, Can anyone recommend a cheap way of calling the UK via mobile. I have used CAT telecom card before but just wondering if there is a cheaper option?

Many Thanks

No idea how much a CAT telecom card costs, but I find dialling 00544 instead of 0044 works out pretty cheap.

If you have a good data plan, or your phone is connected to a wifi net with Internet connection, then you could use Skype or the Call free function of the FB app.

Or Line, or Viber or Tango.

Skype to a foreign landline is cheap as chips but Skype to a foreign mobile can get pricey.

I was thinking both users were using Skype. Then it's free... ;-)

Line, Viber or Tango to a foreign mobile (smartphone) is free.

Yes, but are they not all only between users of the same app?

I've no idea about that, but I have used Tango and Line from my laptop to a Thai mobile and ipad and the quality was not good. Skype seems a better option from my experience.

Yes, but most Smartphone users will have one of the apps. I have them all. The app tells you which of your contacts also have the app. If they haven't got the app, a quick 00544 phone call will tell them to get it.

I've never had a real problem. Line uses less resources, and is usually the best.

I just dial 009-44 it may not be the cheapest, but it's only about 10B/min.

I have recently started using Viber, a service that provides unlimited free calls/messaging local and international. I initially tried to download the service from www.viber.com to my telephone but my non-smart telephone was incompatible so I searched the web and found that I could download the Viber app to my iPad2 which I have done and the service when I call my daughters in California and the UK is excellent.

A reminder, the person you are calling must have Viber on their telephone/iPad. I hope this helps.

I think you'll find 00544 is even cheaper.
