Thailand ranked ninth highest in world for road deaths

Post by buksida »

Thailand is ranked ninth highest in the world for the number of deaths on its roads, according to an annual report by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The country had 13,766 road fatalities, or an estimated 38.7 deaths per 100,000 people, between May 11 and Dec 13, 2011.

The countries with more road fatalities than Thailand are India, where there were 130,037 road deaths, China, with 70,134, Brazil, with 36,499, the United States with 32,885, Russia with 26,567, Iran with 23,249, Mexico with 17,301 and South Africa, with 14,804.

Thought: Amazed that it beat the likes of Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines where they also drive like nutters. I guess the difference is idiots in brand spanking new SUVs here that can go a lot faster than the old jalopeys in the rest of Asia.

Screwy math above, unless I'm doing it wrong. :D 38.7 deaths per 100,000 of population is 25,848 road fatalities for a population of 66.8 million, not 13,766 fatalities.

Deaths per 100,000 of population:

India 10.83
China 5.20
USA 10.47
Brazil 18.34
Iran 30.39
Russia 18.51
Mexico 15.45
South Africa 28.91

Of course it's screwy. Public sector math exists to support the desired conclusions. Such maths and conclusions may be at variance with the facts.

It is probably a safe bet to say most of those deaths are people on motorbikes...very unfortunate

I wonder how much drink-driving comes into it. certainly in Indonesia the majority of the population is Muslim and drink far less than Thais.
