Sea fishing in Hua Hin

Hi there,
I live in Bangkok (Bang Khae area, just south west of the city). Love Hua Hin and Cha Am area and would love to come more often and do some fishing. I've done the stocked lake style tourist fishing and would like to do some ocean fishing, either off a pier or jetty or off a boat (preferably the latter). Any recommendation would be helpful. I am game for all options, from a tourist fishing party boat to a friend of a friend who has a boat and wants to make some money on the side.

Maybe an idea to speak to some guys at the Fishing lodge, possible you could meet people wanting to do the same thing, share the cost and make some friends

I guess I'm in he same situation, I don't really want to pay to much as I'm on a limited budget at the moment. I have looked at friends ponds but they are too full of weed even though they are reportedly full of pla Nin and snakehead. There are many who fish the peer, many at night! I have tried spinning from the beaches with no luck, but sometimes it's good to just wet a line :-)

I didnt even know we were allowed to fish from the beach here, I will have to try sometime, its been to long since I last fished

I have a friend who goes out a few times a month on a boat from Paknampran. I think the last time I joined him it was 1000B/about 6 hours, but maybe depends on how many go. Was a good morning, caught a few snappers and groupers, sunk a few cold beers. Next time I know he is going out will try and remember to post on here.

Do you have any photos? I used to do a lot of deep sea fishing in the UK, but am a little very wary of Thai boats. Did that price include bait and tackle, and did you keep all you caught?

I only got the one pic. Yeah, that price included all but the beer and we kept what we caught. I guess there were about 7 of us, there was a young guy with the skipper who spoke perfect English.

Thanks, but I was really hoping to see a photo of the boat. How big was the boat? Did it feel seaworthy/safe? How far out did it go (hours steaming)? Did he have any special gear to find the fish, or did he just stop, and take a chance?

It was a typical Thai fishing boat, pretty old and rickety looking. The guy i know also has access to his neighbours boat which I think is smaller but in better condition I would think. I dont know anything about boats, so all I can say it was big enough that it wasn't crowded with 10 or so people and all the gear on board, would have been a bit of a squeeze to have many more. He had a scanner/fish finder. I didnt feel we were particularly far out at any point.

I wouldn't wish to dampen anyone's enthusiasm here as I would be right up for this type of trip but the first questions I would be asking are
1. Registered licensed and insured charter boat.
2. VHF Radio.
3. Life jackets that are in good condition and suitable for body weight. ( sorry Big Boy but that's important).
4. Life raft that is big enough to take all persons on board.
5. Radar or GPS

It doesn't matter if you're only half a mile from the shore just say for example that a wooden fishing boat popped a plank took on water very quickly and started to sink one person on the boat makes a comment " we are not that far from the shore lets swim to safety" I would suggest with those ripping tides you would have a slim chance of reaching the safety of the shore. One big mistake people make is they don't think it looks very far.
Using the term rickety would cause me some concern from someone that is inexperienced with boating for me, to get me on a Thai boat it would have to look nothing less that seaworthy.
Just remember their isn't any coastguard or RNLI to come to you're rescue and i am really not sure if any of the palace protection small craft would bother coming out to save you last time I see one moored up alongside the fishing pier the crew where just sat onboard eating somtam and drinking beer.
