GPS Co-ordinates

Post by Big Boy »

Although I've found them on a couple of sites, wouldn't it be helpful if all businesses put GPS Co-ordinates in the 'Contact Us' section of their websites?

Additionally, when people post about businesses on the forum, it would also help. As an example, cookmanchef posted this on another thread (not having a go at you cookmanchef, but it was your post that got me thinking, and I'm just using it as an example.):
cookmanchef wrote:If you ever fancy a trip out and a great location there is an Indian restaurant on the beach road at Dolphin Bay, main meals are very good, starters and side dishes not as much. Go about 6ish and enjoy the colour changes of the sea and offshore islands as the sun goes down.
Now that sounds like a really nice place, but it's a long way to go on the off chance that you're going to spot it. Mrs BB would probably get bored with searching, and we'd end up at the nearest Somtam joint. If such a post could include GPS co-ordinates, it would be a doddle to find, and I could authoritively advidive Mrs BB, "Just 2 more miles."

If you know where somewhere is, it's easy to find GPS co-ordinates using something like Google Earth.

Using the information given in the example, I would not take a chance. With the co-ordinates, a visit would become a possibility.

I have mentioned this very subject to a few businesses with no result.

Here is a cut and paste from Garmin's very own page. They are the top dogs in Thai GPS.

โทร: 0-2636-8421, แฟกซ์: 0-2266-9944,
Customer Care: 0-2266-9948 e-mail: customerservice-gps@cdg.co.th
http://www.esrith.com
N13° 43.380 E100° 31.813

Anybody who knows about map references sees that they are North 13 degrees, 43 minutes and 38 seconds from the equator. However they also claim to be East 100 degrees, 31 minutes and 81 seconds east of the Greenwich line.
I was in their office a few months ago to get my Nuvi updated and I pointed out to them that 81 seconds can't exist as after 59 it goes to another degree. This was totally lost on them.

Also their coordinates are wrong anyway. Luckily their office is advertised as across from the Singapore Embassy. That's how we eventually found it.

sorry, you are wrong.
the version they show is semi decimal its 100degre, 31min and 0.813min
it is not the version with seconds which is highly uncommon.
check your garmin to choose different variants of input.

N13° 43.380 E100° 31.813
Nothing wrong with those coords they just aren't in DMS.
In DMS it's N13° 43′ 22.8″ E100° 31′ 48.781″ but ... is that where they are located?

You are absolutely correct. :(

I just sneaked back to edit my post after finding out that we now have decimal parts of a minute instead of seconds as an option, however I will leave it as a monument to my lack of keeping up with the times.

I shall go and stand in the corner for the rest of the day.

Don't you think we can help ourselves though. If we use [url-http://www.huahinmedia.com/huahinhamandbacon.php]Hua Hin Ham & Bacon Co[/url] as an example. Many years ago on this forum I asked where it was. Quite a few people have asked here since, and I've also been asked off the forum. If he simply added a line to his web page
GPS Co-ordinates: 12o 35’ 02.93”N 99o 57’ 10.98”E (NB: o should be superscript and represent degrees - how did you do that Frank?)
Then passing trade with a satnav would be far more likely to find him.

I can help you with that bit.

With the 'Num Lock' on it's Alt 248. http://www.asciitable.com/

Careful BB, someone may end up on Pluto. which may not be a bad idea if the town gets too top heavy with tourists or Bangkonians .
