Living in HH
Living in HH
As a Newbie here I apologise if this is a repeated thread.
For various reasons I would like to retire to Thailand in the future.
I am coming to Thailand for most of February with the view of travelling around a bit to find somewhere to put my roots down later on.
At this moment I am considering visiting three places.
1) Udon Thani, mainly because it's dirt cheap.
2) Pattaya, large expat community, but do have concerns about it's tackiness.
3) Hau Hin.
Hau Hin is my preferred option prior to visiting.
I am a young 51. I still enjoy clubbing etc. I do not intend to work in Thailand. I will live off my pension. Spare time hopefully will be taken up with golf and other liesure activities. I am single at this moment but hopefully will have a Thai partner before or after I retire to Thailand.
Any comments on living in Hau Hin will be greatly appreciated. The good and the bad please.
If anyone fancies meeting up for a chat when I'm in HH, the beers are on me.

I’m new to the Thailand ex-pat thing also, although have been an Asia ex-pat for the last 9 years so have a reasonable understanding of the Asian culture etc.
Just bought a house in HH, planning on staying there about 3 months a year but perhaps more if work cycles permit. I’ve been to HH seven times on vacation and its appears a great place to stay, there’s plenty of golf courses, nice restaurants, bars etc and it is very laid back and relaxed
I’m not so much up to speed with Udon Thani but Pattaya is a bit too much in your face, for me anyway although I’m sure the ex-pats there will know a lot more than me.
Anyway if you fancy meeting up for a few beers let me know when you will be there in HH and if I’m in town I’ll meet you up and perhaps we can explore a bit.
Cheers

Bladdered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hello there.
"The good and the bad of HH?" I've been here for 6.5 yrs and don't really find much of a negative nature to say about the town. It's developing - some might say too fast- and it certainly has lost its fishing village charm that was evident when I first visited on holiday in 1989.
It's getting expensive - for accomodation and food (Western).
However, everything's relative and it's nothing compared to the Uk, as you'll already know.
As a previous poster stated, the town's laid back. The sex industry is not in your face. There are 6 top quality golf courses within a 30 min drive and the beach recently received a 4 star rating from a university study. No beach surveyed in Thailand received a 5 star.
Loads of ex-pats in town from all over the world and almost without exception, very friendly and willing to give advice should you settle here.
I've never been to Pattaya and have no inclination to do so. Isaan, I know well and is a pleasant break from the farang lifestyle. Only thing for me is that although it's cheap, it can get really boring and I'm not aware of golf courses around that part of the world. I'm sure there are some though.
All in all, it's HH for me. As I'm the worst typist in the world, you owe me a large bottle of Chang on your arrival in town.
Good luck.

Living in HH
Like you I am researching HH, simply becaue I like beach living. I can't give you much information on HH. But I'm now in my third year of living in Udon.
So I will try to fill you in there a bit. You can find just about anything in Udon with the exception of Mexican food. There are a least five good farrang resturants in town. My best guess at aleast a 500 farrangs living locally. probably a low estimates. Good hospitals available. Hookers yes but not in your face. Occassional western movies. Good selection of dvd's available. Bowling golf in the area. Horse race track. Most of the places you go here you will pay Thia prices in thia businesses
My first year here I was single and did a the bar hopping routine, found all the action I wanted, and some I wish I hadn't. I'm now married not to a bar girl, so many of the problems guys experience I do not. My wife is much better with money then I am. Her Mother and Father were deceased when we met, so I don't have the family problems. Down side she would get really upset if she ever found me fooling around. She is not with me just for the money, but it certainly doesn't hurt anything. You would be kidding yourself if you did not believe that is a factor.
I'm not in the bar scene and have built not only what I needed since my arrival but most of what I wanted as well. I live in a nice house, have good home entertainment, bowl about five times a week. Eat out when I want, essentially do what I want when I want. As long as I keep things local I can do very well on 40K baht a month.
It really is a great place for expat living, no matter where you go you will pay some prices for education.
I will check out HH and Cha Am, simply because I want to see what beach living is like. But my gut tells me it is going to be hard to beat Udon.

Your info on UT is much appreciated.
500 farangs doesn't seem much, but there again I don't want to live in "Little England".
I do a little bowling once a week. Would be interested to know what the golf scene is like?
I'm a bit concerened about TV coverage. I do like to watch sport on the box.
My pension would more than meet the 40k, so thats nice to know.
My trip is now organised. BKK, Udon 1st-5th Feb, Patong ( I hope?), Hau Hin 11-15th then back to BKK for a few nights.
Regards,
Gary
