Re: The Android Thread

Post by buksida »

Just acquired a Galaxy Tab from one of the family who gave it to the kids. Now, I've done the factory reset to remove all of their data but want to upgrade to the latest version of Android.

Tried this several times using Samsung Kies and it connects, downloads the firmware then throws up the following really helpful error:

Code: Select all

Failed to run firmware upgrade. Unknown error occurred.
Any suggestions?

I'm had that on my Galaxy III but on re-running it's worked?

Anyone? Baabaa, SJ where are you?

I've tried it at least ten times now via PC and Laptop, different versions of Kies - always the same error.

What I'd really like is Android 4 so I'll have to find a way of doing it manually ... and I though Apple's were a pain in the arse! :banghead:

Don't know if it works but I found a solution online.
Forum members agreed that the error is caused because tk file explorer is ON (whatever that is).
A moderator posted how to turn it off (might be worth a try):

*#7092463*#
then device test
then 6 common
then 3 usb configration
then 2 tun off - tk file explorer..
then press # to turn it off

Let us know the outcome.

Don't even have TK installed so definitely not that - believe me I've also been Googling for the past 12 hours.

Managed to get it rooted now so attempting the manual upgrade using Odin ...

That's nothing. I spend three days on Google to simply get my Samsung recognized by and connected to Kies.

Well it looks like I need something else called Clockwork Recovery mod which, you guessed it, isnt compatible with the Galaxy Tab P1000.

Looks like I'm stuck with Froyo ... :banghead:

I've found a link for installing a custom JellyBean ROM on your tablet, using an alpha build of ClockworkMod recovery which is apparently compatible with your device.

There's a chance you might brick it if you follow this tutorial, so be careful. I haven't given it a throrough read through, so I'm not entirely sure what it involves.

What is it about Ice Cream Sandwich that appeals to you? Is it not possible you could add the functionallity you want to FroYo with a set of apps?

Thanks for the suggestion but this too needs the CWM pre-installed to proceed:
The CWM Recovery should be installed and the device has to be already rooted for this update to install its files.
And the link to the ROM doesn't work:
The file you requested was not found
This is where I'm getting stuck, can't get the CWM on there, Odin doesn't see the device in download mode and Heimdall's Suite throws up other errors when trying to flash the kernel.

Bit short of time atm Buks (spotted this on twitter feed) but have a search for Cyanogenmod Resurrection, if that's not available scour the XDA forum.

If it's a popular Samsung I'm 99% sure you'll be able to root/clockwork mod.

Kies is a turd.

Edit: Just seen Odin not recognising your device, try searching mobile Odin apk from the device, it's also available on the Playstore for a fee.

Yaaarrghh! This did the trick: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthr ... ?t=1881981

I've learnt a lot today about tweaking Samsung tablets; flashing kernels, rooting, installing custom ROMs, using better software than pooh-bar Kies ...

What software are you running then Buks?

I thoroughly recommend whatever the newest Cyanagonmod you're device will allow, I'm loving 10.1 Jellybean 4.2.2.

Some stuff like TV out is broken and FM radio (an app fixes it if you want it) because Samsung are abysmal for releasing source code for developers, I'd never go back to Touchwiz now.

Soooooooooooo, It's new contract time.

I was dead set on the Xperia Z, it's gorgeous, waterproof, 2gb Ram, full 1080p HD 440 ppi and 1.5ghz.

But then I read the screen is a little washed out, not vibrant colours or great viewing angles.

Then HTC showed their flagship for the year, the HTC One.

Running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset with four Krait 300 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, 1080p Super LCD3, 469 ppi. Stereo Speakers. Aluminium unibody.

I've loved my S2, it's been a beast, could probably last me another year but I fancy a change this time.

Samsungs S4 is revealed mid march, so I'll hang on for now, but if it's just got slightly better processors I'll be going HTC for the superior build and screen. 8)

Certainly a good time to be upgrading though. :thumb:

Got "The One" coming tomorrow.

I watched the Galaxy S4 presentation, whatever that was all about, could've had iPhone 5 (LOL) or S4 or similar for same price but having this bad boy.

Cyanogenmod have apparently said they won't develop for the S4, it's a beast no doubt, but going for beauty over a ridiculous processor.

I have a much more basic HTC Android phone and one of the reasons I bought it was because the actual physical construction was so good, particularly when you consider that I'm not on contract and it cost less than a quarter of the cash price of an iphone 5.
As I mentioned on here before, the only reason I bought it was because my eyesight was struggling with sending text messages on the old Nokia and I don't actually use it as a smart phone but I'm pleased with it's performance as a telephone. (I realize that it's a bit eccentric to actually make phone calls on phones these days!)
