Songkran in Hua Hin

Post by Taranis »

We're seriously considering moving to Hua Hin and are currently in the process of finding a property. We've had a few short stays recently without finding the right place for us and have arrived at a conclusion, that we need to stay longer to have a really good search

I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing but the most convenient time for us overlaps Songkran. We've never been in Hua Hin over the five days of Songkran and as it's a popular tourist destination we're wondering if celebrations are as manic as they can be in other popular areas such as Pattaya.

I'd hate to waste a week or so that we could use viewing properties.

So, could some-one advise what Songkran celebrations are like in Hua Hin and where most of the water throwing happens? Is it celebrated for the whole five days or longer?

Thanks

Songkran in Hua Hin only lasts 2 days at best. During that period it can be manic (but fun). I don't think you'd lose too much time.

Thanks. I had a suspicion that it may not go on for too long there but wanted to be sure. If its only 2 days we may as well take a break and join in.

It's good news that it seems our concerns weren't well founded. Saves us the trouble of finding an alternative venue while Songkran happens. Mind you, a respite from house searching might appeal when the time comes.

Thanks for your help.

Here's the official country wide dates for this year....a long one. Pete

Five-day holiday for Songkran

Published: 5 Feb 2013 at 14.09
Online news:

The cabinet on Tuesday resolved that April 12-16 would be the official public service holiday for this year's Songkran celebrations, deputy government spokesman Chalitrat Chantharubeksa said.

Mr Chalitrat said that Friday, April 12, was made an additional holiday because Songkran Day falls on a Saturday, April 13.

Allowing the Songkran holiday to run for five consecutive days would enable people to travel to their hometown in time to celebrate Songkran, and help reduce traffic which is usually very heavy during the festival.

It's likely that the mad rush home on Friday may just become a mad rush home on Thursday then.

Hopefully, making Friday part of the holiday will actually ease traffic flows at the beginning of the holiday with a commensurate reduction in accidents and fatalities, which can't be a bad thing. Some folks will also have more time to party.

I read somewhere that the town centre will only close down on the 13th for partying which tallies with blue05's earlier post and that suits us.

We went ahead and rented a place off soi 6 for 2 momths starting mid-March. As we're planning to live there it's a good idea to get the broadest picture of living in Hua Hin before we commit.

By the way, thanks to the whoever redirected my opening post to the correct area.
