BLOOD TESTS and the like

Post by richard »

I have to have a monthly blood test. The results are then given to me to give to my private doctor.

Does a hospital have to go through the rigmarole of testing your blood pressure, temperature and weight? After all when I take the results to my doctor HE checks my blood pressure, temperature and weight.

Methinks this is yet another hospital scam
to relieve you of money for unnecessary treatment. A qualified UK doctor who is a personal friend assures me it is unnecessary.

Similarly, do you as an outpatient have the right to walk into a hospital or clinic and demand an x-ray which you will take away to show your doctor?. I know of at least one HH person who broke a toe and was refused an x-ray

No-one can walk into any medical facility anywhere that I know of and Demand anything. You are entitled to a copy of your x-rays, lab reports etc. which will gladly be given to you upon request. In Thailand taking your vital measurements are part and parcel of the regular care given to everyone. This isn't any big scam, it's just the way things are done here.

Ask your private doctor how to get your tests done with less fuss, perhaps he can help.

Add respiration rate to that list, even though one doesn't and shouldn't notice it being measured.

You call it rigamarole. They call it vital signs. If you're ever admitted to that hospital, having a history of your vitals could be useful. Another reason is patients can lie or be in denial about their condition. Patient may be saying 'I just need X' while their vitals tell a different story.

I was not admitted. I was there on the instruction of my Doctor with a letter. In other words, he was using the facilities they have. I am quite capable of taking my own blood test (I have in the past) but Laboratory facilities I have not

If it's just a blood test you want, why not go to the little clinic up the Pala-U road past HH School on the right. It's quick too. And they'll even let you stand on their scales if you ask nicely.

Don't fret Richard - they are just making sure you are still alive before they take the bloods

Actually, there is another blood testing lab called "Health Lab" which is right before PTT gas station. You can check it out, reasonable price with decent service.

I think their website is healthlabclinic dot com

All I can tell you is that I practised OB/GYN in Canada for 27 years and 10 years in China perhaps in all those years I may have seen one or two patients who had not been weighed and had the BP and Pulse taken, but I doubt it. And if it did, someone would be disciplined

I have been using the Hua Hin Lab Center for blood tests on a regular basis, for years. I do not need the services of a hospital or doctor to do this, unless of course the test results are off course.
The lab is located on the Pala-U Road, tel (032)5349356, e-mail huahinlab@hotmail.com. It's service is fast and reliable and their charges much much lower than those of the hospitals. You can walk in without appointment.

100% agree. Have been using Hua Hin Lab Center on a regular basis for past 3 years. And when necessary, I just along the results to my doctor. Doctor never queries why I do it privately.

Just out of curiosity what tests would they do on a 'general checkup' and how much would it cost?

Cannot answer that since I have specific custom tests made. I think you have to define which tests you want and they'll do them for you. This is not a doctor's clinic. But why not give them a call? The phone number is listed in my previous post. They speak excellent English.

A Basic checkup include:

1. Complete blood count which includes haemoglobin, White Blood Count, Platelet Count etc.
2. Blood chemistry, i.e. Blood Sugar level, Uric Acid, Cholesterol, Liver Function, Kidney Function and associated items.
3. STD (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B.
4. Urine Analysis includes, pH, Sugar, Protein, Ketone and a load of other stuff.

This test is charged at 1400 Baht.

You can pay as much as 4900 Baht and have literally everything checked such as cancers etc which a friend of mine had done recently.

Hope this helps.

As far as an X-ray is concerned Richard..I went to HH hospital, my wife explained I needed an X-ray, & the images putting onto CD & they were great..all done in half hour, but maybe a bit pricey at 650B..??
As for a clinic..the one Dtaai-Maai suggested is good..have used them before..quick & efficient.
