Don't use "Force Download"
I'm pretty sure 'Force Download' simply means it will still download 24/7 the torrent even if you usually impose a schedule for when torrents are to be downloaded, or limits to the amount of torrents you can download at a singe time. There's no way it should affect download speeds.

At the end of the day, torrents are always going to be dependant on who's seeding at any given time. I remember once having a 5 gig download that was crawling along at 2-3kps for a couple of weeks. I was resigned to the fact it would probably going to take months to complete. Went to bed one night (had about 12% of the torrent at that time, after 2 weeks of downloading) and in the morning it was complete. Either try and find a healthier torrent for that particular movie, or find something else you want to watch and wait patiently the one you're currently downloading.

Trouble with the sound system

Post by lomuamart »

I hope I can explain this fairly accurately.
I've got a TOT line through a house phone. If I play music from my hard drives the sound and vision work. However, if I play something over utube the vision is OK but there's no sound.
The ancient telephone has a red light showing and that dosn't work either. No ring tone either in or out - I have payed the bill!!
This has happened before with the phone and I managed to fix it by probably hitting all the useless buttons on it. I've tried that but to no effect.
I'm useless with technology but I just can't understand why I get sound off hard drive but not off the internet. I'm supposing that there's a glitch with the phone.
Can anyone enlighten me?

If you're using windows vista/7 right click on the little speaker icon in the task tray and select 'Open volume Mixer'. Resize the window to make sure everything is showing. You will see an entry for your browser. Make sure it's volume hasn't been turned down or muted for some reason.

Also, youtube itself has a volume control. Check that's not muted or down to zero

Thanks for that.
The Winamp toolbar is stuck up at the top of my screen and I don't seem to be able to drag it down.
But, I think there's something wrong with the telephone. Why a red light? and said this has happened before but somehow I fixed the situation. Just smacked it probably.
I'm not on Vista. Some earlier version.
Possibly my wife has done me in but I don't think so. I asked her earlier on. No way.
It's this red light o the telephone, I'm sure.
I'm going to smack the computer!!
From a total idiot with technology.

And all I wanted was to hear "Sound and Vision".

I can't help with the phone issue, but it's definitely a separate issue to the 'no sound on youtube videos' one.

If you're on an earlier version it must be XP, which doesn't feature different sound levels for different applications.

without wanting to re-state the obvious, have you checked the volume on youtube itself is not muted?

This is what Google says:

No sound on YouTube videos

If you don't hear sound on YouTube videos, please try the following steps:

Adjust the volume control on your computer and speakers.
Adjust the volume control located in the lower left corner of the YouTube Video Player.
Restart your internet browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.)
Ensure that the volume is turned up on other video players, such as Quicktime, Real Player, or Windows Media player, as this might affect the video player sound.

If you still have no sound after trying the steps above, you may want to try the steps below:

Install the latest version of Adobe Flash (necessary for streaming YouTube videos) after removing any old versions you've installed. Learn how to install the most recent version of Adobe Flash player.
Allow third-party Flash content on your computer by visiting the Adobe Flash Global Storage Settings Panel and following the instructions. Once this is complete, close all browser windows and try re-playing the Live Event.
Please be advised that this action stores a Flash cookie on your computer. Flash enables this by default upon install.
Check your Antivirus and Firewall software to see if you're blocking third-party Flash content.
We are all living in 'the good old days' of the future.

VPN server effects

Post by richard »

Can someone in simple layman terms spell out the advantages/dis-advantages of VP usage please?

One thing I noticed today was my Vuse downloads (17) were crawling along (1kB/s). My StrongVPN dropped out and an immediate increase in download speed (350kB/s). Any reason for this?

Yet another crack down in China Richard which has slowed things down here, but whether or not the same in Thailand...... who knows. The other thing, is that I have had a couple of warning Emails from my VPN provider saying it had been reported to them by the US "Authorities" that I was (1 of many) downloading/uploading movies etc...... BIG BROTHER is watching and this no doubt will also slow things up (as it does in the "Land of Red").

Just a question though - why run Vuze through your VPN? I don't need to do so in China, so can't believe it's necessary in LOS.

I have the same problem using my VPN and I believe it is down to the number of people who are connected to the same server or IP node. It's similar to my 3BB connection, which gets slower throughout the day due to the additional number of people logging onto the service, something called a 'contention ratio'. If you like, the pipe that you have to the internet is of a fixed diameter and so each time somebody else connects to it, your share of the traffic effectively halves. Depending on how much you want to pay your provider, you can have a pipe all to yourself (at great cost!) or share it with perhaps a group of 20 (cheaper) or even 50 (cheapest) but when everybody is online you will crawl along.

I think the VPNs work in a similar fashion. When I choose a country and IP address to join, I daresay a number of other people are doing the same thing because the list of options is fixed and the whole system can become choked. You can either change the IP address, change the city or country you are connecting to or choose a time of day for your downloads when most other people might reasonably be expected to be asleep! If you are choosing to download via a filesharing service that supports magnet links, I think you can use your VPN to start the download and then turn your VPN off if it becomes too slow since the magnet link makes it hard for you to be tracked. Someone of a more technical nature or who has the correct answer may be better placed to advise you.

A VPN is, by it's nature, going to be slower. Your data needs to get from its location, through the UK, then move on to your computer. This, I would imagine, would be especially noticeable in torrents, as you're connected to several download locations at the same time, and they are all having to br routed through England before they arrive at the intended destination

Re: The Digital Surgery Firefox 18

Post by PET »

I use AOL and I see a download which says - Firefox 18 optimised for AOL -
I use Firefox, but do not know what number and it works very well, so should I download this new(?) Firefox which will, I presume, be better for me as it is safe with AOL ?

To see what version you're currently using, click Help, and then click About Firefox. I'm already using 18 with no problems.

Well here is a weirdy

I have a Hotmail account but have not used it for several years. A friend has used my computer to use Hotmail but not for several months.

At night I leave my laptop on as downloading movies through my WiFi and normally go to bed with my Samsung switched off the network. Last night I did not switch WiFi off on my phone

This morning I was woken at 3am by my mobile bleeping. Messages received. So bleary eyed I scanned through them. They were addressed to my friend who uses Hotmail. Not believing what this was all about I wrote the sender and recipients name down on a notepad and a rough idea of content and rolled over and went to sleep thinking 'hey man, too many sherbets last night, you're dreaming'

Mid day today I talked to my friend. Sure enough he had received the emails and confirmed the senders and content and the time sent matched the time I was woken

The only thing I can add is that when my friend and his wife last visited me for a swim and some lunch, his wife logged into my WiFi network to send a message from her phone

HELP.
..........................Have I got a Hotmail gremlin and there are plenty) in my condo?
