Taxi drivers
Strange question! Does this work? If you find a good taxi driver, can you use him on regular basis by calling on cell/ mobile? I gather taxis are still not metered in HH and surrounds, and fares are still negotiate. If i found a good driver, could supply with cheap phone and Sim card if he doesn't have one. Would save a lot of hassles on negotiating. Hate trying to negotiate with a'holes late at night!

OP
DO IT
I have a No1 motorbike driver. Used him for 10 years. Also doubles as a plumber, electrician, odd job man and information finder/getter (24 hours when not pissed)
I have a No2 motorbike driver. Good back up (12 hours daytime)
I have a No1 tuk tuk (24 hours)
I have a No1 taxi (limo) driver (24 hours)
ALL of them feed off me recommending them to my friends visiting and appreciate that and thus don't hike prices.
I also know and visit their homes so I know their families. Anything you need to get rid of or get, they will find
GOLD DUST for me

Further to my post I sometimes have family here for Sonkran so 2 bikes needed to get to the heart of the party. No problem, family turn out. Same with a big shop

Re: Taxi drivers
You do not supply your driver with a mobile phone. All Thais have at least one each. If you should find a driver who don't have a mobile phone, scrap him immediately.
There are no taximeters in Hua Hin. As someone above mentioned, prices are negotiable. However, the drivers tend to stick together about price setting and the negotiating part is often non-existing. He gives you a price, and in most cases it's take it or leave it. Always add a small tip.

A Tip?
A definite no no IMO and according to my Thai missus, if you are giving them regular business then a tip or price hike is unnecessary.
Next thing is we will be tipping vendor food merchants

Re: Taxi drivers
Agreed. This seems to apply across the board - electricians, plumbers, etc.richard wrote: ALL of them feed off me recommending them to my friends visiting and appreciate that and thus don't hike prices.
Then you'll obviously be needing a proper taxi, not a tuk tuk. Our experience with taxis for local trips is fairly limited, since Mrs DM drives and doesn't drink, Gawd bless 'er, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that 4-10 km journeys are cheaper by limo/taxi than by tuk tuk.sandemb wrote:Moving to Khao Kalok so might be sightly different story when want Sat night in HH!
This is the way
Re: Taxi drivers
Most taxi drivers have a business card with their contact details on them - just ask. Our pet tuk tuk driver (been using him for years) will never try to rip us off. If we call him, and he's out of town, he will always get a friend to pick us up at the same cost. It really pays to have a regular.
