Re: TV mini-series/HBO
Didn't know quite where to put this, but it's a TV series, so...
Only came across this bloke recently, though he's been around for a while.
I've never seen anything quite like it before...

Re: TV mini-series/HBO
We really need to change the title of this thread to "TV series". BB, would you mind?
FOYLE'S WAR
Only came across this ITV programme recently, although it's been going for 10 years or so.
It follows a middle-aged senior police detective from Hastings through WWII. Authentic period stuff, good acting - Michael Kitchen is the detective, a great actor, very laid back style. Co-starring a lady with the wonderful name of Honeysuckle Weeks, according to Wiki married to Lorne Stormonth-Darling.
I spent a lot of time in and around Hastings in my mid-teens, so it's quite fun revisiting some old haunts.
EDIT: I downloaded this from TheBox and VeeHD.

DM: Both Mr.VS and I had a bit of a chuckle over this as Lorne Stormonth-Darling is his sister's stepson. Apparently Honeysuckle is a honey, and speaks exactly the same as she does in the programme.dtaai-maai wrote: Co-starring a lady with the wonderful name of Honeysuckle Weeks, according to Wiki married to Lorne Stormonth-Darling.![]()

One of my favourites is Accused. The second series has just started, and if it's as good as the first, you won't be disappointed. You can get it from thebox. Each episode is a stand-alone one hour story. The programme starts with the accused in the prison cell or in the dock, and goes back from there.
Well worth a watch.

Re: TV series worth downloading
There's a new 4 part series on BBC1 called "Good Cop" which is well worth a watch - the 2nd episode was shown last night. Also for those that like to see how building projects really should be done, a new series of "Grand Designs" starts next week on Channel 4.
Re: TV series worth downloading
A few goodies around, - Sons of Anarchy and Boardwalk Empire have started new seasons.
Breaking Bad has stopped mid season but will return early next year.
New series I have discovered are.
COPPER
Period Drama done by BBC America, I have to say, as usual, the BBC's attention to detail for it's period drama's has been followed through to BBC America.
It is a gripping crime series set in 1860s New York City, and centers on Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones, MI-5), an intense, rugged Irish-immigrant cop working the city's notorious Five Points neighborhood. Corcoran is struggling to maintain his moral compass in a turbulent world while on an emotional and relentless quest to learn the truth about the disappearance of his wife and the death of his daughter.
HELL ON WHEELS
Another story from 1860's America.
Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier (Anson Mount) who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time.
WORLD WITHOUT END
TV adaptation of Ken Follett's book. Produced by Ridley Scott.
After a civil war, Queen Isabella defeats and imprisons her husband King Edward II, crowning their young son Edward III but in reality keeping power for herself and her lover Lord Mortimer. Lawlessness is the real ruler of England.
REVOLUTION
Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why? Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it?
I have a few problems working out why there is no electricity of any sort, Generators, batteries etc, should work. Maybe it will be explained a bit more as the series evolves. I quite like it and watch it in the same vein as I do The Walking Dead.
Also check out some great Brit TV drama including The Bletchley Circle, Parades End and Mrs Biggs.

There's a new series called The Paradise that might be worth a look if you like your drama Victorian/Edwardian.

I've been watching a UK police 'cold case' series called WAKING THE DEAD - worth a look. Starring the guy who played Shoestring many years ago.

Homeland season 2 is 3 episodes in and off to a flier.
Up there with Sopranos quality for me, great TV.
Nothing matches The Wire yet though, I'm going to watch all them again now the weather is abysmal.
I might give Breaking Bad a go, I've heard nothing but good things.

Hunted on BBC1 is well worth a look - made by the same people responsible for Spooks and if you liked that, then you should like Hunted.

Re: TV series worth downloading
I'm not normally one to get hooked ('scuse pun) on mini TV series, but a colleague at work gave me the first 6 series of DEXTER
It was mentioned here on the forum long ago by Homer.
7th series being screened now
TV being so dire here in Hanoi - apart from the usual Nat Geo / Discovery and Movie Channels regurgitated rubbish - I decided to watch it.
It makes Silence of the Lambs look like Andy Pandy...............
Here's a 'Blood Spatter Analyst' who works for the Miami Metro Police during the day whilst moonlighting as a serial killer - with a conscience!
Add this to a police department with all sorts of relationship issues, a foul mouthed sister and a marriage to seem normal, with interjections of his own thoughts and the memory of his childhood, a brew of almost black comedy is offered up.
Every episode seems to end with a twist that simply compels you to watch the next.
I'm already almost finishing the 4th series and it still grabs me.
Freely available from all the usual download sources - highly recommended 10 / 10 stuff

Re: TV series worth downloading
Im a big Ken Burns fan. Ken, IMHO, is possibly the greatest of the American history documentary makers about at the present time, whose narrative history series help viewers not only understand complex history, but through the use of narrative techniques which immerse the viewer in the lives of the people who lived through that history he thus sets the subject in a real world context.
His previous series THE CIVIL WAR and PROHIBITION have price of place on my hard drive archive.
Anyway, Ken is back with a new two parter broadcast in the US on PBS = THE DUST BOWL. Looks as excellent as his usual work, and Im looking forward to it popping up on YouTube in a week or so.
This is a lnk to the extended interview he did about the series
Id be surprised if Kens series are not in the Smithsonian Archives, because when it comes to understanding America and its history, hes your man.
