The nearest land border crossing I'm aware of is Ranong.

Ranong will be the closest. You cross over to Burma from there. Assuming you have a Tourist Visa with more than one entry, you'll get the next 60 days there.
Buses run from HH but I can't advise of the timings any more - check with the bus station south of the town centre. It'll take about 6-7 hours to get to Ranong so make sure your arrival time will suit Imm both sides of the border - Burmese Imm used to shut down at about 5pm. If I were you, I'd go a day earlier than necessary in case the bus is delayed.
You can hire a car or take a taxi but the will obviously hike the cost up.
Trains run to Chumphon and you can take a bus or minibus from there to Ranong.
From Ranong to Burma you have to cross an estuary. There are long tail boats going from the pier or more comfortable craft from The Andaman Club/pier which is out of the town centre.
If you bus it, reckon on leaving HH around 8am and returning about 1am the next day.
Prices will be around 200 THB one way on the bus - the fare was 180 or so about 5 years ago. Motorcycle taxi to and from Imm about 300 including waiting time and long tail boat about 300 as well. You'll need a pristine 10 USD note for Burmese Imm and you can get that from a main bank in HH - cheaper than getting one off the black market in Ranong.
When I used to do the run some 5 years ago, I'd reckon on about 1,300 THB all in including beer and food money.

Looking at Dawei on the below map they will surely have a crossing at the Thai border directly east of there , I would think by year end 2013. They're going to run a highway all the way to the deep water port at Laem Chabang. My understanding is that construction for all of this development is very close to starting. Pete

Robert, I did it last week, details below, but there is a good thread from Usual Suspect about 6 months ago who made an overnight mini break of it and he also refers to a thread by Rider who describes the Andaman Club set up.

One day hire car, 1,000 Baht. I collected it the night before so I could set off early. Left HH at 5 am, one quick stop for petrol & coffee and arrived at Andaman Pier at 9.45 am. 850 baht for the ferry fee which left at 10.15 but I had to wait 2 hours on the Burma island for a return ferry at 12 ish. Left Andaman Pier at 1 pm and drove straight home with another stop for petrol and 2 quick stops to ask the way in Chumpon  Arrived in HH about 7pm and that was driving as quickly as the traffic/road conditions would allow. Petrol cost 1,600 Baht. :thumb:

Hopefully never again
