This thread was never going to be of much practical help to anyone, given the huge chasm between incomes of people living here as well as the vast differences in what people consider necessary for a good quality of life.
+1
'What is the cost of living?' is the most common and least useful question I've seen in 10 years of reading expat forums. Those who ask the question either haven't thought it through or have worded it poorly or think that everyone lives the same way they do. The useful version of the question, IMHO, is 'What is the cost of X?' where X is a list of both every day purchases and less common ones like rent.
Here are two crowd sourcing websites gathering location specific cost of living data,http://www.numbeo.com/ and http://www.eardex.com/. I've used the former, can't say much about the latter. Earn some good Karma: go to a site and input some costs for the items they have listed.
In my opinion, if you constantly compare prices here to what a specific item may cost in your homeland (or any other country for that matter) then maybe this isn't the place for you....!!!!
Everything is relative and things cost what they cost........ Simples.
wow..200k baht a month..maybe my dreams over already..i was hoping 80k was enough if you own house, car...cook at home ok..no kids...1 dog...thai wife..but she is frugal..was hoping to play golf once a week..looks like i was dreaming:(

I don't live full time in Thailand as I work away but I maintain there a partner and a stepson, two houses,a small farm, a pickup truck, two motorbikes, four dogs and probably a couple more relations as well and if it cost me 200,000 a month, I wouldn't be doing it!

Plough your way through all 19 pages of the thread before you panic. And let's hope it's then allowed to die the natural death it so richly deserves.

Yes, there's not much point looking at the higher figures that some people have suggested on here. If you wanted to spend money, you could go down Soi Bintabaht and get nine girls and a transvestite and pay them to cut your lawn with nail scissors wearing bikinis. I know peoplke who are prepared to spend several thousand baht a day just so that they can look for a small white ball in undergrowth!

I'm sure 60-80k should suffice, although are you sure about spending 15k on beer - that's about 20 cases of 24 small Singhas, i.e. about 16 cans a day!!!

Dtaii Maii...
I don't think this thread deserves a death as it has a lot of quite decent info of living expenses from the affluent to the barrel scrapers.
I myself live on just over 20k a month. No rent or housing expenses to be paid for. No girls. Couple of trips to Hua Hin a month (again no expenses for accommodation as family live there) .Drink a few beers most days. Key thing is I work hard Monday to Friday so literally spend a couple of grand during those five days then enjoy my weekends. Gonna be a lot different for the retiree of course.
Do you think we should separate all 19 pages into their own individual threads in regards to wealth, lifestyle, amount of ladyboys one wants and the frequency in which one might play golf...? Or should we just leave it all lumped into one thread and if anyone is at all concerned about the cost of living here they can simply scan through the 19 pages (not exactly a thick novel we are talking about here) and let them be the judge of it all....
Of course saying this all these figures will be out of date in a year or so with inflation bla bla bla so maybe a yearly thread would be more apt.
I lived in Hua Hin for 11 months, my average monthly spend was £1200 which is about 60'000 baht.
this was because I was drinking everynight and averaging 2-3 ladies/massages per week.
Your basic living costs for a single man should be something like this.
Apartment/condo/guesthouse, 5-15000 depending on location and quality.
Electric - under 2000
Food per day, 115 baht for KFC, 99 baht Pizza Hut lunch deal small pizza and refil pepsi, 140 baht any medium Mcdonalds meal, 30-90 baht thai food.
You could easily live off 20'000 Baht if your apartment is around 5000.
image - if you live smart and sensibly 8o is enough - certainly if you have car and house.
when u coming, I always like talking to chefs, usually some great stories!
