would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie)..
if a great steakhouse was set up in hua hin run by a very experienced chef from aus..would you patronise it and how much would you be prepared to pay for ..ex..300 gram A grade quality scotch fillet or rump...maybe this place exists already..if not..i would love some feedback..thanks
Re: would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie).
I would say the town would benefit from a great steakhouse, I used to go to a great one in bkk and for 300g fillet with choice of potatoes etc it was 490b, cooked to perfection, well worth it
Re: would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie).
I've only eaten there once but doesnt PRIME fill this spot--but it is much more expensive than the numbers you mention
Re: would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie).
Anyone who can copy Norbus steakhouse in Rawai, Phuket, I would visit on a weekly basis. 3 years since I last was there but it was run by a guy from Tibet. Far from the tourist trail but always busy during the 7 years that I visited there. Best meat I have ever eaten. Cooked to perfection (medium rare). Chateaubriand was 590 Baht and they had a great choice of wine. House 1 litre redwine was around 500 as I recall. Bottles if you wanted better at reasonable prices. I can pay for a great steak but I don't want to splash out 2000 or more for the wine when I have better wine in the cellar at home for a fraction of that cost.

What is this BIG,BIG deal about every damn restaurant shouting out they 'only serve Imported Australian Steaks'..?
Everywhere I see the same adverts, same banners, same-same, but same.
Is there really such an avid dislike for Thai Steaks that you just HAVE to go out and pay 2/3 times as much for some Aussie meat..???..
(Are we out to eat Teerak??..OK, give me a moment.. I'll just put on my shorts, sleeveless chequered-shirt, work-boots,and Driza-Bone hat so I'll fit in when I'm sat eating in the restaurant..

Any restaurant has to look at the tourist trade - including Thai tourists - for the bulk of it's income IMO. I'm not knocking good steaks at all, nor having a go. But realistically many expats either can't afford to eat out regularly enough to keep restaurants going throughout low season, or prefer to cook at home (and can buy good quality steak in HH to cook themselves.)
So I think you have to look at the broader market. A high percentage of HH expats are Scandinavian/German etc, who are well catered for already.
Most expats do get used to eating Thai - and seafood - which in HH is excellent. They might want the occasional special meal, and for the Brits, Americans - and the few Aussies - that could be a steak. But it would have to be very good, and the restaurant would have to cater for the Thai wives as well. One bad experience and they won't go back - there are other places to go.
Western tourists have a couple of weeks in which to experience Thai quisine. Those who go on holiday to HH are expecting seafood. A few will tire of it half way through and maybe head for a Big Mac or a steak house.
Thai tourists - and they are year round of course - might go for an Aussie steak because it is a bit different, and because it could be good for their 'status'. But they are more likely to go to a recognised Thai brand outlet where one is available. They tend not to venture into 'non brand' places.
Last but not least is the crucial bit - getting Thai staff trained well enough to cook a steak exactly to order. Which unfortunately in my experience is where it goes pear shaped. But to be fair that's often where it goes pear shaped in the UK as well.

My response is a simple NO. I'm quite happy with Thai beef.

Re: would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie).
Having lived here for 10+ years, I've adapted to the point where I eat most as the Thais do. In fact, I only eat western style meals three or four times a year. With that said, I do have a steak every now and then, but it's Thai beef, and I honestly don't think it's bad. I have my steaks rare, so not easy to get it wrong.
Thai beef can be awesome, but you just need to know how to prepare it. Unfortunately many Thais don't know how to prepare beef since most prefer pork and chicken. Others just can't be bothered, even if they do know how.
My MIL for example can make excellent steak the one day, and absolute rubbish the next. The same applies to native Thai chicken. One day it's cooked to perfection where it literally melts in your mouth, and the next time she makes it, you need a heavy duty angle grinder to get through it.
So, in a nutshell, I personally am not willing to pay for imported beef, and neither am I willing to support the import market when it comes to livestock.
PS: A good kangaroo steak would be nice once in a while though.

ok thanks everyone for comments...looks like its tourist market or nothing....guess ill just lie next to swimming pool and have a beer..forget about business:)
Re: would you frequent a great steakhouse(meat from aussie).
I rarely order a steak when out but am happy to pay for quality and good service. If you want the Bangkok crowd then visit a few places there where the will happily pay fortunes for Wagyu, Kobe, good wine etc in the right surroundings and location especially if they are entertaining. A good Chinese I would frequent for sure and so would the Bangkok crowd.

I've found that to be an excellent formula for enjoying Thailand!....guess ill just lie next to swimming pool and have a beer..forget about business:)
And to answer your question, in over ten years of being based in Asia, I've never ordered a steak there as I find the other options to be far more attractive and also more healthy.
