LOCKOUT

I like Luc Besson flicks. They are almost always well made, well plotted, and great eye candy, especially his sci-fi flicks. Well, Luc is back with another, but the force is not strong in this one.

In 2070 the US builds a space station come super max prison where inmates are held in cryo stasis for the duration of their sentence. But all is not well and there are accusations of illegal and forced medical experimentation on the inmates, as well as supposition that the stasis sends you bonkers. So the POTUS's daughter, who heads up a human rights charity, goes up there to take a looksee. At the same time down on Earth an old school CIA agent gets kippered up and ends up the fall guy in a botched operation. When a cock up results in the prison inmates breaking loose of stasis and kidnapping the prison staff and VIPs the agent is given a choice.....go up and save the day, or be sent there any way and spend 30 years in a deep freeze. Cue explosions.....

Yes its a good action flick and has all the usual quirky Luc Besson touches like mad Scottish bad guys and dry wise cracking humor, but it just doesn't try hard enough with the eye candy....it looks pretty much like 2015 rather than 2070. And its also pretty obvious that the last third got edited down to hell to make it fit the 1hr30m dumbass jock on a kegger with a goldfish attention span format....the end is so squashed up its a real disappointment and obviously has been shredded down by some brain dead test audience. When you need to have the surprise bad guy monologue all the back plot in to tie down the film that says they made you cut out all the storyline bits and film this nonsense Elastoplast scene instead. Its all put together very choppily....seems Luc went off for a gallic 6 hour lunch and left all the editing to a crew of standard Hollydud hack merchants. Its a shame, even though it is still a good flick. Guy Pierce really saves it.

So well worth a download, and scrapes through as a keeper....but only just. Two cheers.

Out and about in lovely crisp DVDRIP formats all over the shop.

In other news it seems Hollydud's feverish feeding of 80s and 90s sci fi into the recycle mashup shredder has now taken in the old Sly Stally flick Judge Dredd. Seen the trailer for the new film DREDD and .... it looks crap. Press on the Spiderman reboot says that is crap as well, and the reboot of Godzilla also looks utter dross. Maybe next year they will get back to actually making something new and original after the finish pissing on films that have already been made.

Be fair bro....beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Some people, and most every critic including fatty Ebert, thought that JUNO was an excellent film. I thought it was an utter and complete sack of panty wetter sh*te. A lot of critics and commentators slammed 300 because it wasnt historically accurate...they just didnt bother to understand that the pont is its the Greek bloke telling a story the way Greeks did....full of monsters and heros.
I liked Juno and 300! :P

Well, one of my major gripes with Hollydud is that the community there seems to spend ts time watching what each other are up to and piggybacking genres - which results in slews of same same films coming out at the same time. TweeLite inspired a whole slew of crappy clone edgy teen vampire flicks full of 6 pack were wolves and vampire councils; most recently we have been inundated with a sh*t tsunami of edgy teen revisits to fairy tales.

Bad news for atheists and freethinkers for 2013. Guess what the latest flog the dead horse till y can see its rib bones trope is.... yep..... Biblical epics. THREE....yep thats THREE major productions are in the pipe....TWO of which are about one of the most laughable bits of the Babble...Noah and his floating zoo. Feckin Russel Crowe as Noah? Oh come on for fecks sake. The other seems to be an Old Testament mash up of all the most fabulous (and I mean fairy tale like) bits. Even Ridley Scott is making one and hes a sodding full blown "Religion is the worlds greatest evil" (his words) atheist. Not content to be left out and spotting a chance to get back at Mel Gibson for his swingingly antisemitic Passion there are rumors Spielberg is contemplating jumping on the cash cow as well.

And I'm accepting bets on how many have an intro card saying something completely stupid like "Based on a true story" at the start.

Now... heres my gripe.

One...why the hell three or four all at the same time. I love steak, but I wouldnt eat it every night. Saying that Ive been on a steady diet of Chicken Jalfrezi for a week or so......hmmmmm.

Two...I actually like the old 40s Technicolour cast of thousands epics like Ben Hur, The Robe, The Ten Commandments, etc. BUT they were made when we still were not 100% sure of the veracity of the texts. Now, 60 or so years of archaeology, climatology, geology etc later we now know that ALL of the stories in the Old Testament are utter non factual foundation myth nonsense. We also know that audiences seem to think cos its a film it must be true.... Braveheart and Passion being two examples. Rationality is having a hard enough time of it as is. More mental minefields is not what are needed.

Three......If you want to make a Flood film why not use the original text - The Epic Of Gilgamesh? In fact....there's an idea for a film. That's a great epic in the making right there. The Epic makes Wrath Of The Titans look like a vicarage tea party. Oh yeah... cos it aint gonna sell to a religion crazy yank audience who think their later versions are the originals.

To abuse a well known traditional English phrase.....

God save me from Hell, Hull and Hollywood.

Anyway, rant over..... back to watching my back catalogue of old film classics given the slew of dross that is on the release scene at the moment.

Imitation is the sincerest form of Hollywood (and television, pop music, architecture ...)

I worked for a film studio. Word gets round when fast when Someone With Clout buys a script that's outside the norm. Anyone who has a financial interest in a similar script that's been lying dormant starts promoting it. Usually turns into a Johnson measuring contest involving a race to be released first, where everyone wants to win even if they foresee a lemming-like finale for most of the pictures.

Anyways, back to reviews

THE RAVEN

In a foggy murky 1840s Baltimore a police inspector is baffled by a bizarre series of murders that seem very familiar....especially as he is something of a fan of gothic fiction, and the killer seems caught up on the works of a certain local writer....Edgar Allen Poe. Poe is busy drinking himself to death and seems burned out as a writer, but when his fiancee to be becomes the killers latest kidnap victim the game of death turns personal, and it is down to Poe and the inspector to find the killer before Poe's fiancee becomes another of the crazed fan's victims.

Its good stuff - more steampunk Victoriana of the new Sherlock Holmes franchise than straight history - sort of Sherlock Holmes meets Seven and Saw. It has a lovely murky feel about it, which meshes nicely with the Penny Dreadful whodunnit plotline, and the odd arty flourish keeps the eye candy on screen fresh and stylish.

Well worth a download, and a solid three cheers keeper in my humble...

Out and about in reasonable sized BDRIP and BRRIP formats. AVOID the R5 copies as they have a shabby CAM soundtrack source that ruins the watching.

Three cheers for doing something fresh.

CHERNOBYL DIARIES

This is pretty generic, so the rev will be brief. Its a standard out of the box horror chase flick. In this case the "angle" is its a party of backpacker tourists who decide, while on a trip to Russia, to do some extreme tourism and go on a day trip to Priyat (?) - the abandoned workers city next door to Chernobyl. After a day wandering the abandoned city they return to their van to find it trashed, so now the only way out is to trek out, and as well as packs of feral dogs and rivers full of weird Piranha like mutated fish the city seems not as abandoned as it was made out to be.

Ok, so it scores bonus ball points for the creepy and novel setting, but other than that its your standard paint by numbers horror chase flick. Worth a watch if that sort of flick rings your bell, but nothing novel about it other than the setting.

Out and about in ironic R5 DVDRIP formats, but bear in mind that the actual soundrack comes from a CAM version, so its crappy sound quality.....which spoils some of the tension as you cant hear what the hell is "whispering on the wind". IMHO you should wait for the full proper DVDRP to come out soon.

One cheer for the setting

Fun for all the family with Aardman Animations new feature film length claymation comedy THE PIRATES; BAND OF MISFITS

Pirate Captain, who is the most incompetent pirate in the world, has only one dream - to win the coveted Pirate Of The Year award. Unfortunately he is up against some stiff competition in the form of Pegleg Hastings, Black Bart Bellamy and the feme fatale Cutlass Liz. So he and his crew of not very good pirates set off in search of the ultimate treasure. When they bump into Charles Darwin and his chimpanzee manservant Bobo things get even crazier, as Charles spots that Polly the Parrot is in fact Polly the Dodo....and he wants to pinch Polly to win his own award and impress the psychotic pirate hating Queen Victoria.

Yep, just like Wallace and Grommit this is another mad as cheese Aardman flick full of laughs and spills, and wall to wall with lovely little details in the background that make you want to hit pause to take a closer look. Even the end titles are a pack of laughs with japes and jokes spliced in between the serious stuff.

Absolutely top marks dads and lads laughs all the way, and a solid gold keeper.

Out and about at all the usual suspect places in lovely crisp DVDRIP formats. Avoid R5 copies as they are crap.

Three yo hos and a shiver me timbers

Ok, two out of the goodie bag that are now out and about in lovely crisp DVDRIP formats.

BATTLESHIP

When scientists discover an Earth like planet in a neighboring galaxy and send a SETI style hello message, the last thing they expect is for the planet to send an expedition to come a knocking - and no surprise they haven't brought punch and pie. The aliens are here to conquer, and throw up a force field around Hawaii, where luckily there are naval exercises being conducted, leaving three battleships inside the force field. So its up to our misfit crew of plucky matelots to save the day....

Yep..... its just Independence Day for the year 2012 with a nautical twist o hemp. There are big things exploding, lots of gung ho gusto, some eye popping CGI, way too much unnecessary 3D claptrap, a totally pointless product placement tie in with the old Battleships game, and a metric ton of thrills and spills. And while it is as stoopid as a pallet of bricks, its damn great fun and thrills.

Great entertainment, and well worth a watch. A three cheers keeper t is....

which can not be said for....

HUNGER GAMES

Once upon a time there was a Japanese extreme film called BATTLE ROYALE about a bunch of kids forced to fight each other to the death on a remote island with a romantic sub plot thrown in on the side. Then a shabby author in the USA took that, added a dash of Blade Runner dystopian future to it, and wrote a novel. Finally that got turned into the latest cash in on the teen market donkey, hyped and flogged till its ribs showed , and churned out like some lukewarm puddle of poodle puke.

Really....take my advice. Either watch the infinitely better original Japanese film or just shove hot forks in your eyes. Either option is more fun than sitting through this steaming heap of Tweelight panty wetter crocodile dung.

A nice little medieval murder mystery in the same mould as The Name Of The Rose and Cadfael from Germany tonight....

ISENHART

Born the bastard son of a renegade Crusader Isenhart is raised as the blacksmith's son. His friend is the son of the local lord, and Isenhart falls in love with his sister. Then one night the girl is found dead with her heart cut out. The man thought to be responsible turns the finger on a local bishop, and thus the local lord is drawn into a conflict that sees his house fall, and his son and Isenhart having to go into hiding. 5 years later more girls turn up murdered the same way, and so Isenhart and his friend set out to catch the murderer and have their revenge.

Its a nice little whodunnit, keeps you locked in all through the film, and even though its been made on a pretty thin budget its very well done all considered. The plot throws in a few red herrings and false leads to keep you guessing as well, which is a smart move.

Well worth checking out if you are a fan of whodunnits, and out and about on the net in dubbed versions as well as the original German. A keeper and a three cheers one as well.

I'd never seen the original, and I actually enjoyed it. However, my son who has seen the Japanese film, tended to agree with your views.

THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL

Image

'A group of British retirees decide to "outsource" their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self.'

For me it didn't quite reach the heights of 'Pirate Radio' and 'Slumdog Millionaire' but still terrific. A breath of fresh air. Entertaining, colourful and uplifting. :thumb:

The Japanese film is almost identical except for its set up premise for the games, which looses something in the translation I think. Its basic premise is the games are a way to control out of control schools of kids (like the Thai vocational college gangs) - cause trouble and your school gets put into the lottery. Otherwise its identical in almost every other aspect - and thats another reason for me hating it. In interviews the author and makers of the film deny ever hearing of Battle Royale, which is so obviously a damn lie its ridiculous given it had a US release and gained press notoriety for its extreme plot.

MrP

Thanks for reminding me. Saw a trailer a while back and it slipped off my mental watch list. Will look it up now.
